If it's correct that it had no service between 2008 and 2011, then it looks like it's broken the 2 year minimum rule, which could have repercussions on any warranty claims.

Thats not true - Warranty and service intervals are dictated by the on board light computer which also has a baring on time as well as mileage. The oil is fully synthetic so will not degrade - I spoke to BMW the other day about both of theses issues ...

No, it is true. When you say you spoke to BMW I take it you spoke to someone in a franchised BMW dealership. If that's the case you'll find that very often their staff are ill informed, as is the case of the person you spoke to. The cars need an oil change after 2 years regardless of service indicators. It's all in the handbook.

oil and brake fluid every 2 years max to comply with service schedule. Other items are based on mileage or more accurately litres of fuel used. There cannot be many more people who need educating on this point any more surely!!

VvrooomM,

Go easy ! the chap has only posted 3 times and may not be familiar with the BMW service schedule on these cars (hence why he/she may have spoken to the dealer).

By all means correct them if they are mistaken on something but lets do it with a bit more tact !

Fully synthetic oil degrades and it becomes contaminated with petrol/water/soot/etc. just like any other oil. Even if you simply open the bottle and leave it open (i.e. not putting in an engine) it will still degrade - slowly, but it will!

It's engineered/formulated to be resistant to higher shear forces and give extended life. BTW, not all 'fully synthetic' oils are fully synthetic - it's a marketing term and so can contain anywhere from 5%-100% synthetic class IV base stock (i.e. not crude oil).

If it doesn't degrade/contaminate, then why change it?

...spoke to the dealer...
Don't believe everything you hear from a dealer - I've known more than one to claim my e34 M5 was a V8 and might be susceptible to the Nikasil problem. I've also had to point out to dealers that the valve clearances should be done on an Inspection 1, as per the service schedule, and not just Inspection 2.

Dealers know Sh!t.

I spoke to one who reckoned the engine in the 1M was a tweaked S54

AUC = wothless (In reality) Dealers use there judgement and happily sell cars that aren't warrantied.

Thanks very much for the advice guys - I called another dealer and they said that two years is best. Ism going to write a letter to the dealership that gave me he wrong information! What about if a car is in storage or is not used over the 6 month winter period but breaks the 2 year cycle - seams crazy to service it - better left till the spring ...? Is this ok ....???
