Headlights

Z4M coupe headlights have me a bit puzzled. Within the main cluster there seems to be a red glow within the centre of the inner light housing (with the angel eyes). What's the purpose of this? Are these additional lights and how does one activate them?

Been to look outside again . So these have no function then when you have xenons?

AFAIK, with bi-xenons there is no inner bulb on each side - the dipped lights have a 'shield' that partially obscures the light giving the chopped bean. and when you switch full beam on the shield moves out the way of the light. So no need for another bulb.

Perhaps they fitted cyborg eyeballs to work with the DSC+ system and that's the glow you can see :P

So is that a reflection from a shield simply stopping light leaking from the outside light ranski ? Or was my description wrong and there is actually another bulb in there ?

I think what you said it correct bing

I just thought it odd that the shield looks red in the above pic when the light I opened had a blue shield

I have mine open at the moment - pre-facelift xenons -

There is no red filter in there, just a silvered shield ?? Unless there is a change with the facelift lights?

Tapatalking...

Had a random thought - is the red on both sides, or just one ? If just one, could it be an early sign that the xenon bulb is going and it's reflecting off the inner shield ? I remember reading somewhere on here that when xenons are about to die they go pink.

So should the car have four head lights then? Two each side? Think mine only has the outer ones? The inner ones don't light up I don't think. I'm in bed now so will check in the morning

Only the outer ones. The colour of the inner ones is confusing as it should be silver or blue, not red.

Sleep tight :D

So what do the inner ones actually do then? Just have angel eyes. I want double xenons each side lol

Maybe mine has the heat seeking missle option?

Just the angels. Weird that you want two - I have two because I have halogens, and I really want xenons...

4x xenon must be better than 2x xenon. Do the inners have reflectors such that another pair of HIDs could be installed, or just a blanking plate?

i thought about retrofitting dual bixenon when i next open up my headlights (which needs to be done to fix a small blemish), so that would mean fitting a HID projector into where the old style halogen sits cutting it out. or if you have facelift it will likely be even easier as you already have a hole there. If you look on some of the other BMW forums lots of people fit these into old style E30 and E36 headlights. It seems even with stock Xenon lights the light output is way under some of the newer cars out. I am not sure how legal dual xenon X 4 would be since technically it would have levellers, headlight washers as its sat next to the OEM xenon projector but is there anything that states you can only have 2 bulbs not 4?

Not sure if its worth all the effort though, I imagine it would be nice and bright and still not affect oncoming traffic, but an idea....

You would also need to fit the auto levelling arms if you are concerned about oncoming traffic

Saying that quite a few of us have installed xenon kits (in may case I also put a non ribbed lens in each projector) I've had these installed for nearly two years with no complaints or angry flashing oncoming drivers
