Headlight washers not an MOT requirement on pre 01/09/2009 cars

I see lots of posts about broken/leaking headlight washers, so thought it was worth posting this extract from the MOT testers handbook;

If your E85/86 was registered before 01/09/2009 - so nearly all of them, you can just disable them and not have the front half of you car covered in water. If you direct your MOT tester to the MOT handbook, although you really shouldn’t need to, they cannot fail your car for this.

If they are not leaking then simply removing fuse 40 should do the job, if they are leaking, pull the fuse and bung the tube at the washer fluid reservoir.

This is UK only.

I pulled the fuse out on mine ages ago mainly to avoid having to replace the covers when they inevitably pop off.

That is good to know. Now how do I stop mine from emptying the tank as I don't want to use them, ever :D

Guess I could plug the hose

Sorry, did not read your end sentence where you stated that :lol:

Well clarified!
I always thought it was 2006 so that's me corrected.
I have fuse 40 removed too. :D

Anyone know the bung size as I haven't got any at the moment :D

The headlamp washers are more trouble than they are worth! My MC has passed 2 MOT tests with Fuse 40 removed. :D

Wifey's 53-plate needs a bumper respray. Though it has xenons I have a standard replacement bumper ready without washers. I'm going to get that fitted and sprayed and at the same time fit a single pump washer bottle and get rid of all the extra pipes etc. Looks cleaner too.

Weeks after I got my Coupe I used the windscreen washer and when I got home discovered I had last both headlamp washer caps. Then I discovered the cost of replacements so after fitting them, with a little silicon, removed fuse 40 and its been like that for years. No MOT issues.
