Have you adjusted you lifestyle yet?

I was just saying ive noticed prices to get work done for our house getting silly high, £600 for a new fence, £1000 for 2 new PVC doors........

Im pretty lucky i get a lift with a chap here and because its on the way he only charges me £5 per week! I guess it would be more like £20 + a week if i drove myself!

Life wise nothing has been cut back........ But i could see the hint of off loading a car if things get though!

Cheers

Well a month has gone by since I posted this and we start our emergency electric surcharge next week along with an increase in garbage to cover fuel costs (premium gas is now $4.59 here). Don't get me me wrong I know costs associated with fuel have to rise, but it is pretty amazing how many things are getting influenced accross the board. I cannot help but believe this is farther reaching than the times in the 70's. I see alot of people that do not have any float in their monthly budgets really getting squeezed. My wife and I have made some adjustments but the savings have now parlayed into the rise of our utilities, food and fuel. I never intended for this topic to get political or lay blame, I just have been fascinated by the tremendous ripple effect playing into motion. :)

Don't forget that , IIRC, the minimum wage law goes into effect next month. That will also cause a ripple across the board also

I go along with all the other effects you mentions, but the minimum wage is one of those 98% political moves, i.e., do you know 6 people that actually make minimum wage? I know of no one that makes minimum wage.

You are right about the ripple effects. A lot of my patients are not well off and they are really beginning to suffer. Luckly they can still see Physicians & go to Hospital for health care since we have health coverage here. People are spending less and less. For example - lot's of my patients' parents do not buy coffee at Tim Horton's and instead make their own. Gasoline prices have gone up by almost 50% in the last 6 months and that has been terrible for some people - even well-to-do people who own businesses. People are buying less and businesses are making less. Hopefully the world will stabilize and prices will come back to what is fair in a stable world.

I have faith that the oil situation will get worse for a year then will go back to being below $100US/barrel. I believe the world dynamics are about to change.

This is a bit off topic but I will allow a reasonable discussion to continue on this subject so long as everyone can remain civil.

I have a counter argument but not on this forum....

Actually I do, and mainly in the service industries and some blue collar jobs. Yes, they are starting salaries that go up fairly quickly, but the businesses themselves have to absorb the cost of payroll, which is then passed on to the consumer/user. It will not have the widespread effect that gas prices do, but I do foresee a ripple from it.

I hope that you are right. A lot of families are really suffering here in Canada, and I assume, also in the US. Instability causes unstable prices and the poor suffer the most.

Would love to hear your counter-argument - how about a PM? I realise that I do not know a lot and am always interested in learning more and altering my point of view.

enfield, for some reason I always thought of you as a highly educated medical professional, are you?

I know medicine fairly well. I am not so good at patience and kindness. Working on those issues. I, unfortunately, am the sort who thinks he is always right even though I know it is not possible or me to be right all the time. I also realise that I do not know as much as I would wish I knew. Therefore, I like to listen to counter-arguments to broaden my horizons.

On a separate note I am reading a book by Pat Buchannan "Churchill, Hitler, and the Unnecessary War". Quite interesting view-point. Very thought provoking and I am loving it!! I do not agree with Pat Buchannan on most things but I am liking the review he gives of the History behind WWI & WWII.

Amazing how most peeps don't know, to start what would be WWII, Poland was invaded by 2 countries at the same time: Germany AND the Soviet Union.

another really interesting view on WWII is a book called "The Blitzkrieg Myth" sheds a lot of light on some really poor decisions by the allies (read English) in the first months.... we let a lot of people down because of basically being scared after our losses of WWI, not saying its correct (as is oft the case with historians, bits will be bits wont) but its bloody interesting..

Will take a read of that "Churchill, Hitler, and the Unnecessary War" .. not the first time i've heard people talk about it..
