Has anyone run PS4’s and F1 Assy 5’s

I’m moving to a square set up with a nice set of forged 405M’s inbound (8x18 ET34) I’ll probably run a 10mm spacer on the rear to get them close to flush.

I’m looking at 225/40/18’s all around, which will give a more neutral balance and, by saving circa 3KG per corner un-sprung mass, should give a bit of nimbleness down the country lanes I frequent!

I’ve run PS4’s before in an 18, but never tried the Goodyear eagle F1’s (Assy 5’s) - is anyone able to give a direct comparison of both?

There’s only about £25 in it (PS4’s £330 fitted F1’s £305 fitted) and I’m tempted to try the Goodyears but don’t want to regret it. The Khumo Ecsta 71’s come in at about £268, but that seems a bit of a silly choice when the F1’s are under £40 more…

Any thoughts welcome

I went from F1 asymétrics on 224’s to PS4s’ on 19” CSL’s

The F1’s at the time were 5 years old, were an earlier version with 6-7mm of good tread.

Despite being on 19” rims, was amazed to find the PS4s’ noticibly more compliant at soaking up bumps, yet very grippy. My only point was they needed a little heat in them before being used enthusiastically & in anything under 5 degrees (summer Michelin or Goodyear) be careful

However both seem to get rave reviews, so suggest to simply look which tyre wears out the slowest.

Happy days 👍

On an E89 I’ve run 18” 235/40 265/35 Assy 5 (also Conti Sport 5) and 19” Michelin PS4S 235/35 and 275/30

Different chassis respond differently but..

I found the Michelin’s relative ‘dead’..not a lot of feedback from them…sure they grip very well, ride seems compliant.

The Goodyear’s I found had slightly better feedback, again albeit on 18” ride was good, grip never caused any issues.

The Conti Sport 5 were arguably the best in terms of feedback, you knew exactly what the front end was doing, grip again was very good, was great to drive in the rain, comfort was the best.

On an E85 the chassis may tell you something else..

Ive run both back to back.. very little in them in terms of performance tbh, the goodyears felt like the better tyre in the dry, extremely grippy and gave lots of confidence but they were also one of the noisiest tyres Ive ever used.. wouldn't go there again, theyre both a good tyre wet and dry but the Michelin probably edges performance in the wet in terms of outright feel, if it were a choice of only those two Id probably go for the Michelin just because its slighly quieter and a little better in the wet

Currently running Dunlop Sportsmaxx RT2 which is better than both imho, quiet, comfortable, very grippy in both wet and dry.. perfect tyre for me.. however we all appreciate different qualities so always worth checking the online reviews.. the Michelin ps4 is a very safe bet tho

[ref]mr.tourette[/ref], that’s funny I’ve always chosen F1’s previously because the were quieter and more comfortable than what was previously fitted and I would have fitted them to the SL if the PS4S hadn’t been on offer.

As to the OP I don’t thinks you can go wrong with either tyre, one is not significantly better than the other, with each having advantages and disadvantages, however don’t take my word for it, take his

Great choice of wheels! 10mm spacer at the rear is spot on.
I run 225/45/18 Michelin pilot super sports all round, so up a profile to Z4M tyre size. I do get a bit of rub at the front on full compression but I prefer the meaty look and value the extra sidewall for rough roads and overall ground clearance. 225 square is in my view a great balance for road driving. The 3.0si isn’t that powerful so with 225s at the back you get a nice balance and throttle adjustability. I’d always go for Michelins and have PS4 tyres on my original z4 wheels. They grip well and do have a decent ride. They wear very well too if that is a consideration!

I have Goodyear f1 at the rear with ps4s at the front, just about to match the rears with ps4s.

I did have f1 all round and we're much better than the rft that came with the car. When the fronts were worn I went for ps4s and IMHO have better grip than the f1 and steering feels better. Going to try ps4 at the rear now with the Z4M profiles.

On my e85 I feel the Michelin have better wet and dry grip than Goodyear f1 assy, but only marginally.
Personally for wet grip, Vredestein are better than both, but prefer the slightly better dry grip from the Michelin.
As said, people have different opinions, and tyres can feel different to different folk, but don't think you can go far wrong with either.

Thanks for the input all, appreciated. I’ve run PS4’s and PS4S’s before, so might just stick with PS4’s this time around again

It was seeing the photo’s of them on your car that made my mind up, I’ve liked the design for a while and after nearly buying a set of Style 32’s I knew I wanted something lightweight and strong, but preferably O.E. Not to mention that wheels like Apex Arc’s are serious cash!

Should land later this week

Quick update, decided to try the Goodyear’s as I’ve had a few cars on PS4’s now and although good, not as good as the PS4S which is 19’’ only. Hopefully the Assy 5’s will be decent.

I’ll report back one they’ve bedded in and got a few miles on them

I was very disappointed with my Assy 5s but after about 250 miles either I got used to them or they bedded down  :driving:

Its funny how we all react differently to tyres eh.. i found the assy 5s one of the best feeling tyres Id ever run bar the noise, yet other folk lean toward the ps4 and find the goodyears quiet :D does make me wonder about the endless tyre tests as the results (at the top end of the criteria at least, a crap tyre will always be crap) are basically down to the individual testers feel

I’ve read a few similar comments, particularly about them not being a quiet as PS4’s initially, but that this changes as they bed in. The date stamps on these are very late 2021 (can’t remember the week off the top of my head), so latest compound and in truth the tyres capabilities probably exceed my own :driving:

Also, £300 for the 4 didn’t seem too much of a gamble when there’s a lot of positivity out there in internet land for them

For most folks you could pick any of the top 7 tyres in any review and they would probably exceed by some margin what the average Zed owner does on the street.

For me the issue with the E89, is that the nose feels a long way away from you and there is a remote feeling to the steering..tyres that help mitigate that feeling have a disproportionate positive effect on how the car feels to you..

Ultimate stickiness / stability etc are all very well but if you can’t feel where the front is at then it’s all for nothing. IMHO.

That’s why I’ve liked the Contis ..they just seem to suit the E89 chassis and give great telegraphy, in the wet with that feedback I felt
could press on as if I was in the dry..

What suits a Golf may not suit an E89.

An Assy 5 is not a MP4S in terms of absolute grip, but I doubt most if any folks would get close to ever needing that on the street.

How you finding the tyres mate? Any pics of the car with them mounted?

Only fitted the wheels to the car a couple of days ago and it’s been hovering around zero degrees since so not been out yet.

Pic’s here;
