Halifax logic escapes me

and I have just well and truly had my piss boiled by them !
In an attempt to rationalise my credit cards and get a card with no transactions fees abroad, I decided to shut down my Halifax a month ago. They told me to cut up card and pay off the balance which I did, not once did they ask why I was closing the account. Anyway, fast forward to this month I discover they do a good deal on a no transaction fees card, so I applied for it online, only to be told that I couldn't apply for a card as I already held one.
So I rang them, and told them what the issue was at which point they insisted on taking me through the whole application process again, as I did not have the number for my old credit card ( which I had cut up... ). At the end, they told me I couldn't have another one as alhough I met the criteria, my account was still active. I could wait for it to close down and then apply again 30 days after that came into action.
At this point I asked could I not just transfer the current card ( which was obviously still in process of being shut down ) to the one I wanted, but no, I have to do the above. This is completely useless as I am travelling to Germany next month and having dental implants done which is why I wanted a no transaction fee card.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH......... Neither can I apply for a Lloyds card who offer a similar deal as they are linked to the Halifax credit cards, and the Post Office ( yes the Post Office ) turned me down. :headbang:

Nationwide do a card (or they did) with no fees when you use it abroad, is that what you need?? I use mine all the time when travelling. Lloyds/halifax and me dont get on so i would never recommend them. Santander get very good customer service scores now, what they got??

Mick

Thanks Mick, but Nationwide currently only offer to customers who have accounts with them. I shall have a look at Santander !

Tried Santander and Tescos, neither do no fees abroad. Only other one is Saga, and I am not old enough for that.

I have a card from Santander called "zero" which has no fees abroad, maybe it's not offered anymore ?

I have one of these. I keep it going using once of twice a year just to use abroad.

I've got a Sainsbury's credit card with no transaction fee for use abroad. Just pay £5 a month for the card which also includes travel insurance - works for me :D

good luck in Germany,...if you were going to Romania Id say just to check you still had both yr kidneys when you wake up

Having the actual implants done in Germany, two with bone graft for 2000 euro together done by a maxo facial surgeon vs £2k each done by a dentist with some extra training over here ! No brainer really. The crowns are another £1k each, but that's the same in both countries.

We get most of our dental work done while on holiday in India - very high standards and surprisingly cheap. Cindy had 4 zirconium crowns fitted last Nov at £76 each :)

Dizzy, it might not be of any use to you as they only have branches in the London area, but try Metrobank. No fee accounts and credit cards and no fees in the EU. If you have the required docs you can book an appointment and leave with the card about an hour later.
