when i was considering what car to buy before i got the z4 i looked at the mazda rx8, and one thing owners did was to re locate the front number plate from in the middle of the grill to the lower valance, just wondered if anyones done it on the z4? im considering it.

If you put it that low, you're going to have problems with it hitting speed bumps, you won't get into most driveways with dropped kerbs, and car parks will become a pain (I know as I've spent 2 hours trying to remove a carbon-fibre front splitter on a Skyline that got stuck in a Belgian multi-storey!

i was thinking of having the bottom edge of the plate level / just above the lower edge of the lip, so it wont catch, well only as bad as i catch the front now, it would just be the metal that supports the plate that would be a bit lower, only 10mm or so. agreed in the pic i posted that would be too low - my z4 is already 30mm lowered so i would smash the plate on kerbs

Why do some Ferrari (or other super cars) have no front number plate? Is it road legal for those cars having no plate shown because of the design?

A Ferrari owner probably has that much money he/she'd rather the car looked good and pay the occasional inconsequential fine.

3 options I came across:

1) http://www.gominigo.com/NHLPB-main.html
2) http://www.skenedesign.com/FPBracket/plate.htm
3) http://www.swiftmotorsports.com/product_info.php?cPath=2049&products_id=3144&osCsid=e630b4f4f01bc35a0a9f31e771cba318

Wouldn't lowering the reg plate raise the cars Cd (Drag Coeficcient) therefore increasing resistence and lowering speed/fuel economy?

If you put it coming up from the bottom bar then you're going to disturb the direct airflow to the radiator.

How about a stencilled plate on the mesh in front of the radiator - or would you get stopped for that too?

I have a sticker plate (Loads less drag :D ). When i put my aero front end on I didn't want to drill into it so bought the sticker type. Looks good to me, a bit more racy.

ah good point, totally forgot about the airflow going through that mesh. i think that kinda puts the idea to bed.

Cool, but totally illegal in the UK where IIRC plates have to be rigid fixed.

Still if you only activate it discreetly who'd ever know??

yes thats what i was thinking of doing, only the lip of a pre facelift doesnt have that raised bit, but it does look good.

Nice, wonder how it's motor would fare with our gorgeous UK weather and salty roads - would still like to try one out though
