or :icb: and I would never make it to the gym everyday lol.... just a tipmcbeee said:gannet said:you would think so wouldnt you.... the money part - Ive no energy left for the gym...
trouble is the bike wears -chains, brakes, cassettes etc and all needs replacement/maintenance. Not sure I actually save anything :?
How far are you riding that your gears, brakes and chain are wearing out and cost more in maintenance than a gym ??? Good excuse but I'm not buying it , unless you're Lance Armstrongs riding partner.![]()

What on earth are you doing to them? I used to cycle 10k miles a year in my younger years, and the bike I brought back from NL has about 25k miles on it - besides brake pads, I have never replaced the chain yet ... It is all Shimano gear though and only (flat) road use.

Try and get a mix of cardio and weights in your weekly routine. There are many people at my day job who cycle to work and are still on the fat side, so just cycling to work will help with your cardio fitness, but it won't shift weight on it's own (if that's what your after)! Also take a look at what you eat and when you eat it!!
Breaker said:Oh, andI have just gone back to cycling the 9 mile journey to work and back again (weather permiting).

yeah I dont use the angle at all... little cog at the front goes no further than the 6th cog at the back (rarely even that far)... and vice versa so big cog at the front no lower than 3 at the back and again rarely.pvr said:9 cogs? That angle (assuming you use them) will kill your chain indeed. Mine only has 5.
. The side-effect of this is that I don't wear my bikes out so quickly anymore kipperonabike said:My, my, Gannet - you must be a pedal stamper I reckon. I have changed my riding style on my commute, mainly to avoid having to shower when I get to work
but also because I'm plain tired of RACING every young whipper-snapper who takes a fancy to my wheel, only for the b%^&ds to cruise thru the first RED LIGHT

Have you tried fixed-gear? It very cost effective - cheap 1/8" chain, single sprocket, no need for rear brake blocks (so rear wheel rims never wear - but rear hub does!!) - easy to maintain and clean AND a joy to ride.
