Guys with Automatics..do you use the paddle shifters?

a bit off topic : I always use Sport mode when I cruise on the highway (cruise control on) as the more sensitive throttle control does give me about one mpg better economy.

back on topic: I like to keep it in manual mode and use the stick and paddles because I have accidentally  put it into Neutral by trying to downshift with the stick when it wasn't in Manual. Old habits are hard to break and if there's a stick I'm reaching for it . Left hand on the paddle, right hand on the stick........works well in the corners

Sorry but that makes no sense at all.
Firstly if you're using the cruise control then you're not using the throttle, so sensitivity doesn't enter into it and if you do increase the speed it accelerates harder in cruise with sport and again may use more fuel.
Secondly on an auto as soon as you press the sport button the car drop a gear in almost all circumstances and then will use more fuel due to higher revs.

I'm amazed if you can evaluate a 1mpg difference as 2 psi tyre pressure, different fule, slight headwind, etc. would all make greater variances, however I'll be using cruise control can make 10mpg difference over manual throttle, but that's another story

Cj, blistering long drives over here give you plenty of time to compare "cruise on" with Sport selected vs Normal mode. Sport+ won't allow cruise control so can't compare. I found that the +/- speed differential while set on cruise is slightly smaller in Sport mode due to the increased sensitivity and the car makes smaller throttle adjustments than in Normal mode. It is only 1 mpg on a base of 34mpg so 2 to 3%.
when you jump in and drive 800 to 1000 miles non stop (except fuel stops ) you need something to occupy your mind. Some of the roads here go for 100's of miles with barely a curve in them and when I count antelope in the fields to stay alert I have to quit after about half a million so car testing and data collection happen a lot...

I'll leave you to count antelope and don't know what Sport + is so w'll part amicably on this one.

Best unbroken run I get is 90 miles down the M40 early am when I reckon I can do end to end without touching cruise other than perhas 2 or 3 times when an idiot does something too close.

Sport+ kicks off the DSC and the cruise control and changes the DCT programming and "may" affect the throttle sensitivity ( I'd like to think it does but probably not). It's not like an M Sport button but it's the next best thing... it also changes the adjustable M suspension (if you have it).

Besides, 1 mpg aint worth scrappin about....
