I'll prob be the last to fit as... as a) i havent paid yet, and b) i will be flying to south america tomorrow for 3 weeks :lol:

But still no worse then having a reinhold for over 15 months and still not fitting it!!
 
I did not have good experiences with Reinhold, the last module I had (not for my car), did not work and Reinhold never replied to any emails so was just a waste of money in the end.
 
Bought a battery operated soldering iron today, and solder.

I was just wondering if one of these would be able to strip the wires "mid" wire?

No, that will not strip the wire as it is designed to only strip a cut wire (i.e. the end).

I did the following:

- Use a knife to make two incissions about 5 - 8 mm apart on the cable.
- Move the knife from incission 1 to two, stripping the top insulation off.
- Lift the wire out of the remaining insulation and take the insulation which is then free hanging underneath and cut it away using the knife.
- Wind the joining wire around the exposed wire nice and solid and finish it off with solder to permanently make it safe.
- Put insulation tape around the area (say about 2 cm is fine to cover it all).

Considering how thin the wire is. I'd say skillz! Will also have to purchase a stanley knife as it seems to be missing... :(
 
From the pictures above it seems like all of the wires that the Gaptech module need splicing into are terminated at one of the Z4 wiring harness connectors. Unless I'm missing something it would seem to me the better option is to pop the pins from the connectors and solder directly to the wire ends of them. Won't know until I pull it all out to investigate I suppose...
 
i have a set of these http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=TH1827 much easier then a knife, takes half a second to strip some casing off the wire. also i tend to use heat shrink instead of tape, but tape should hold for a good while.

This might sound a daft question... but if you're not cutting the wire, how do you get the heat shrink on? I thought it a sleeve that you slid over the join... surely if you wrap it around and heat it, it will shrink and fall off??

Or am I missing something here?!
 
Whatever you are missing, I am missing the same :D

I can not see how you can strip insulation with that tool without cutting the wire either.
 
Ive used strippers ( oh er ! ) for years to pull back the insulation on cables. Those red ones pictured aren't great though and its very easy to cut the cable if there not adjusted correctly. I use a set of side strippers, which have holes at predefined sizes, so the conductor is left untouched.

I think skillick is just pointing out that you cant use heat shrink unless you cut the cable ( or disconnect it from the connector ;-) ) as heat shrink is a tube, which shrinks with heat and has no way to insert the cable, apart from threading it trough the middle, which isn't possible if both ends are still connected ...

From over here in the Colonies , as you blokes put it, I may be the last arrival.
Anxious to install because, you see, I am 6'6" tall and it is almost impossible to ingress and egress the vehicle with the top up.
Can't wait. Hurry up Postman! :(

That's mine fitted and all seams to be working great, did solder the connections though.
