Goodyear F1 Asymmetric Tyres

I have fitted a set of staggered 19" wheels with Eagle F1 AS2 tyres and run them at 2.0 bar (29 psi) at the front and 2.1 bar (30.5 psi) at the back and am quite pleased with them on my coupe.

I would say the pressure makes a big difference after a fee months the pressure in my rears went down by 2 psi and it tramlined all over the place.

Agree, large wheels/low profiles don't actually have that much air in them compared to standard profiles, so relatively little air makes a big difference. Plus the tyre pressures drop 1-2 psi for every 10 degree drop in temperature so it's important to keep checking and set them when stone cold.

I could understand it if different tyres on the same axle caused instability but different tyres on front and rear axles shouldn't cause an issue IMO. Granted if you're pushing the car hard round some lanes and find that either it understeers or oversteers wildly then it could be due to reduced grip from either axle but in a straight line I can't imagine different rubber causing issues when they're matched on the axles. Especially considering that they are both decent sets of tyres. As others have suggested I'd play around with the pressure a bit first before spending out on new tyres.

Give 34 psi front 36 psi rear a shot and see how you get on. :)

Right I did a little testing this afternoon, I re-checked my cold pressures with two different gauges and depending on which is correct was running either 29F/31R or 32F 34R I. I upped it as suggested to a mid range reading of 34/36 and voilà a noticeable improvement in motorway stability, I'm very happy, so thanks for the suggestion

Can anyone recommend an accurate pressure gauge :headbang:

I bought one of these (as it is self-calibrating with an accuracy of +/- 1.5%)

No worries I have always found those pressures spot on on the z4 and my previous 123d both running 18inch non run flats. It's weird how even slight differences in pressures affect these cars!

Not saying these settings will feel right for everyone but they suit the way I drove etc :)

I had them on the rear of my ///M for a few weeks and had major issues with them.

I did not try and fit them to the front too and see if this cured the issue (possible imbalance on sidewall loading and behaviour between front and rear axle making car feel very unstable) because I was worried that if this didn't make me happy, I would have shelled out ££££££'s for 4 new tyres which made the car terrible.

I replaced them for Michelin's PSS's all round, which are absolutely brilliant. Here is my thread, hope it helps you:

Neat item, I may have to invest as mine are clearly out

I had Goodyear F1's fitted to the rear of my 04 3.0i SE just over 1k miles ago, to replace worn Falken FK453's.

The handling after this change at first was all over the place and I put this down to the protective coating on new tyres. When it did not improve after 600 miles I had a 4 wheel alignment done. This has been done 3 times and the car is set up correctly but although the handling is better than it was, it is still unstable at speeds over 60mph.

I still have the Falkens on the front which still have 4mm of tread on. After reading threads on here, I am now convinced the problem is either the new tyres or the miss-match of the Goodyear and the Falkens.

Do I replace the Falkens with new Goodyears on the front and will this solve the problem or will it make it even worse?

Or do I ditch the Goodyears and replace with Falkens?

What load rating are the tyres you bought?

Really interesting thread, think I will have a look at my pressures. I can not push the car as hard as I could the old 120d coupe, may be the tyre pressures could be the answer. I have run flats on just now, but will be looking to change to NRF when the time comes.
