Good price for boiler and fit

My grandparents have just been quote £3600 to supply and fit a new boiler, I'm no expert and never had to do this myself but that sounds a tad excessive? Can anyone advise what a good price is or if that is actually on the mark?

Sorry Matt not enough info to comment. Make, size and type of boiler...Combi or System etc. level of control, weather compensating?
Inc of VAT, swapping like for like? If its a simple swap out, it sounds expensive...sounds like a British Gas price to me.

I've just been quoted a price of £3,600 for a car i'm thinking of buying, does that sound too expensive?

Would suggest around £1000 for the boiler and up to £1000 to fit (subject to type and size of boiler, location, new controls, electrics, flue location etc). If its a British Gas quote half it for real world prices. Try the Institute of Plumbings website for registered gas installers (Make sure you go to a Gas safe registered installer)

http://www.ciphe.org.uk/find-a-plumber/about-find-a-plumber/

Recommend getting at least two more quotes - good luck :)

My mates a plumber and charges £400 for a boiler change. He says that normally involves a change to the pipework and a bit of electrics. 4-6 hour job with commissioning.

Obviously you have to add the price of the boiler on top

The price quoted by the OP does seem a tad excessive although as others have pointed out a detailed spec of the actual work proposed needs to be advised. I guess that a new condensing boiler is proposed, to meet latest Building Regs, therefore additional work to the existing flue and condensing drain runoff is required.
As others have said British Gas quotes are OTT and they subcontract the work in any event. Get at least three comparable quotes from registered CORGI contractors.

Just had one fitted into a rental property - a few days ago. This was was BAXI combi boiler, 33KW. Total cost, including fitting, removing old boiler, 7 new thermostats and one replacement rad was £2,200. £3,600 sounds high(ish), but if it's a good make and high capacity (i.e. for a large house) then it's probably about right.

Find out how long it would take to do the job and add in the cost of the boiler and any other bits and pieces to arrive at what you think is a fair price.

A plumber quoted me £2,000 for my boiler change, he reckoned it would take a day, so 8 hours absolute max, the boiler was £800, so that means for labour he was going to charge me £1,200 for 8 hours or an hourly rate of £150. I told him to go forth and multiply. just make sure you don't smell of desperation, plumbers can smell it a mile off!

Brain surgery it 'aint!

Cheers guys. It's to remove a floor standing combi, supply and fit vaillant ecotec 831 plus combination boiler, supply and fit new flue through roof, power flush, supply and fit condense pump to discharge to soil stack and fit time clock and room stat.

Actually looking at all that it sounds like a lot of work but I don't know anything about it and want to make sure he isn't being ripped off

Make sure you ascertain whether it includes 20% VAT, because contractors have a habit of quoting nett with a small print note regarding the addition of VAT to the final invoice.

Now you know what's required get two other contractors to quote on this specification.

My flat is around 800 sq feet and so similar in size. A quick Google shows me that the boiler you've been quoted for is more expensive than mine - to the tune of around £200. Supply a fit a new flue could be messy/difficult, but so hard to say without actually being there. My gut feeling is that it's expensive without being a complete rip-off. I've heard some quotes (e.g. British Gas) going off into cuckoo land. Unless there's a kindly soul on here (and for reference, I'm no expert) then my top tip is to try Mybuilder.com to get some other quotes. I've used this site for a number of jobs and it has proved invaluable.

Good luck.

Very true! Cheers all, very appreciated :)

Doesn't mention vat at all! He's getting comparative quotes

That's the pitfall. The Vailliant 831 boiler is around £1050 plus other materials say £1500 and £1000 tops for labour therefore I would be expecting an all in quote around £2500.

They,re having their pants pulled down & properly spanked at the price quoted /
my son is a gas registered heating engineer who charges on average £1250 / £1750 for supply & fit of a new combi bolier depending on make +spec of boiler
You should be looking around the £1500 give or take 10% for the job doing as a rough guide

The Ecotec 831 boiler on it's own is actually £1200 including VAT (just checked the price  ) so would be most surprised if someone could do that for £1500 all in with the work required to the new flue through the roof, condensing drain, electrics, thermostat etc.

x2

See how the comparative quotes stack up. Are your grandparents in London also....there's always a tradesman tax in London unfortunately.
