GOOD MODS BAD MODS

Good mod:

Ditched the RFTs for Pilot Sport PS2s
Edit - add remove the CDV as a definitely Good Mod(TM). I went for the stealth replacement from Zeckhausen.

Nice mod:

DICE iPod interface - with the caveat that I would go for the Intravee interface using an Alpine iPod interface and add in a Sat radio as well now. This wasn't available when I got my Z4. The difference in audio fidelity between the DICE iPod interface and the BMW AUX input is huge and listening to my iPod once through the AUX interface was enough to convince me I had no use for this built in feature.

Didn't work for me mod:

LeatherZ arm rest. At least for my desired seating position in my Coupe it was too high and interfered with my shifting. Almost everyone else who got one is quite passionate about theirs so I am a notable minority in this opinion.

And the best ever mod you can ever do for your car is to educate the loose nut behind the wheel. Even if you never become a track junkie go out for at least 2 events with your local BMW Club chapter and get some seat time with an instructor to show you how to really drive your car. Nothing you have ever done on the streets actually prepares you in the slightest for how you can really drive your car out on a track. Almost everything you learn out on a track will make you a better driver out on the streets. And the best part about this mod is the fact that you get to take it with along to your next car. And the next one, etc.

A good mod is spacer's followed by wider tires to fill the wheel well, Eagle F1's do the trick..also, side aero and rear panel makes it 'sit' nicely..

I did a lot more mod's but these 2 stand out the most..
 
Good mods (not in any particular order):
- CDV surgery
- Eagle F1's A/S with compact spare kit
- Painted plugs for front bumper and door/trunk locks
- Full circle brake lights
- Roadstersolutions.com wind deflector
- Racemesh.com lower chrome mesh
- Painted washer nozzles
- Chromed the original BBS (most significant "stand out" factor on the car)
- Chrome tail pipes
- Removed all lettering/numbers
- Convertible roof side covers
- MTEC 4700K Super-White Xenon headlight/foglight bulbs

Bad mods:

- Stubby rubber antenna (reception sucks, wish I could find a painted and operational stubby "à la Mercedes SL")
- Emptied the bank account doing the good mods :headbang:

Compact spare
Fabricated underhood jack mount w/jack
Leather Z arm rests (doors only)

Full circle brake lights
Paddle shifters

12 disc CD changer
Mud flaps (painted to match)
Painted washer nozzles to match
Tom Tom One XLS GPS
K&N air filter (made no difference in performance but helped the sound a bit)
"Roadster" licence plate frame (picked up 20 hp with that one!)
Tinted front and rear marked lamps/relfectors
BMW Factory car cover (excellent fit) for the overnight road trips

Bad mods:
stone chips
curb damage to front spoiler
small dent in top of rear fender when I dropped the brush cleaning the top :headbang:
(waiting on the paintless dent removal guy now)
 
Good Mods:
Stubby Aerial (not noticed bad reception with mine)
Replaced kerbed 108s with 203s (I will get some pictures up soon...)
Ditched Bridgestone Run Flats for Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 ZP
AUX Input
Extended Cigaretter lighter socket - now have three in the glove box
Cruise Control
Clear third brake light

Bad Mods
Stone chips on front lower lip
 
Good:
Chrome exhaust tips
BMW ZHP weighted short shift knob (favorite so far)
Stubby antenna (reception is still good for me, but listen to MP3s most the time anyways)
BMW medkit storage boxes under both seats
Trunk storage kit that hangs on the inside of the lid
Chrome caliper clips (once they're installed)

Bad:
BMW mesh wind screen (pain to put on, and it doesn't do a lot to block the wind)
 
Good mods:

Ditched the RFT's when I fitted replica CSL's
Ditched the replica CSL' and fitted 19" BBS CH's
stubby ariel
Gruppe M intake
Whallen shift machine gear knob
Carbon door pins
Dension Ipod link
replacing the BMW bluetooth kit with an aftermarket Parrot CK3100
Infinity 10" amped sub

Bad mods:

Stubby ariel, looks great but useless for radio reception
Infinity sub - broke after 13 months and only had a 12 month warrenty :(
LeatherZ arm rest and door pads. The armrest I never got on with and wasn't keen on the look, the door top leather things looked after market.

To do mods:

CDV
Change the brakes to either something from EBC or maybe a BBK
Fit carbon fibre dash
Get the car lowered
 
OMG - I'd be here all day if I listed the minute mods like stubby aerials, painting calipers, ss clips and cf decals so the main one's:

IMHO all mods are good if you like them, they are tasteful and use quality items/material and are part of an overall co-ordinated scheme/plan

For me:
Great mods

Clear headlight with AE :) and matching clear sides, rear, white spot brakes and full circle brake 'stop'
Facelift front to 2007
MFSW and paddle shift on steptronic, plus cruise control
Dream red leather ///M sport seats on memory bases replacing standard black
Uprated Sat nav with personalised OS system, plus maps with cameras, etc.
Hardtop - love it or hate it, but for me pure style and comfort in Winter

Marginal/questinned value
OEM Bluetooth - awesome in use, but oh so expensive and the work to fit it

Bad mod
Not fitting clear bra after front end rebuild as I have 2 chips already
Allowing my wife to ever park the car = 2 minor kerbings

Mods I stepped away from
LeatehrZ anything from armrest, door pads, knee pads - all too much fussiness

Mods I should do
facelift rear to ///M design with 4 port exhaust
Wear out the RFT's and replace
Mess about with the suspension, bushes, shocks and springs

Mods I must not do, ever, ever, ever...

My theory is that he is like me in that
A) If it ain't broke don't fix it
and
B) I've seen a lot of "enhanced" cars break down more often that if they would of let stuff well enough alone
hence reinforcing opt A.
 
Sound logic Aebous, but there is the other possible route:

If it ain't broke tinker to see how it works - best prepared for when it does break
If it stills works, do some preventetive maintenance - you can never be too careful
If that still hasn't broken it upgrade it

Now drive it like you stole it - hell you've got an upgraded part designed to take it.

That should have broke it, really really well, for good.

Now restore to stock and count the cost :cry:
