Well I have done it

Yesterday I purchased a G29 M30i M Sport with comfort and Sport pro packs in San Francisco red. 18 months old with 8k on the clock and immaculate. Cost me £15k to change.

This was after much reluctance and as it turns out, unreasonable concerns re a soft top. I was intending to wait for a demo at my local dealership but they would not release it for several months. STMBO found this beauty at Syntner’s in Chigwell who offered me exactly what I asked for for mine so drove down to London and picked it up yesterday.

Driving back I can say when passing lorries the noise inside the cab was a little louder than with a hard top but nothing to get upset about. Weather permitting this weekend will get some decent wax on her and spend a few hours working out what all the stuff on the idrive is for and configuring it.

This may sound naive but I assume a normal Maguiers shampoo to wash the whole car as normal and a conditioner for the roof after a few washes to keep it looking good?

Re the noise, can’t say I notice any significant difference but I drive with the roof down every opportunity in both E89 and G29.

When washing I just use my normal shampoo and don’t treat the roof with anything specific. Only real difference for me is I personally don’t snow foam the roof .

About wash, I used to use bilt hamber product (Touchless snow foam, auto wash shampoo, Korrosol for fallout remover and wheel cleaning). Highly recommanded. During the easter weekend, I spent 2 days on single stage polish then applied Geyon Mohs Evo ceramic coating so now I switched to use Geyon wash product to make sure they are compatible with the coating.

About the roof, buy the BMW soft-top care kit which contains the cleanner and impregnating agent (people usually call this waterproofer but it's not for waterproof) which is very easy to use. You only need to do this at most once per year as long as you don't wash the roof when wash the car. Just vacuum clean the roof when it's dusty.

Having used it for nearly 10 years, I can recommend Gtechniq I1 Smart Fabric for the roof - it's breathable, doesn't affect the colour and water just beads and runs off.

Thanks guys, just spent ages configuring the systems, ordering the Gtechniq stuff now

It’s a firmer ride than the 35is but like any new car, it takes time to get used to it.

Expect to have sore arms over the weekend from putting on some wax. Boys with their toys as my wife keeps saying.

Got to say that I wouldn’t bother with all that soft too conditioning. Really is no need. Just don’t use a jet wash directly on the roof as it does the fabric no good.

It's simple to do and I feel it does protect the top layer no end otherwise you will need to clean it more regularly.

Just need to be completely clean and dry and a sunny day.
