Golf R

There is no denying that these 4cyl turbo hatches are quick but they are sadly lacking in the 'growl' department when compared to the 6cyl lump in the m135i...Saying that, I'll probably look closely at the Gold R come renewal time.

Golf isn't RWD though. That's a major issue for some. Admittedly not everyone.

Ignore the Rwd V 4wd . Judged on looks ? which would you choose Og ?
If people only chose their cars because of they way they looked Fiat wiould never have sold a single Multipla

I accept that but Tim stated the Golf R was dull yet the 135i was " interesting" :? hence the look's debate

Get down the showroom then!

That could be dangerous and only had the M135i 6 weeks or so.

I do like VWs as had a Passat years ago but the Golf does look so dull, at least 1er looks more interesting so to speak.

Tim.

C'mon Tim , you never mentioned having cataracts before  Golf R dull but the 135i isn't ?

To the uninitiated the 135i is just the smallest BM at the bottom of the BM tree with the standard fayre of skirts & badges that now confuse even the most BMW range savvy :o i appreciate it will go like a scalded squirrel but at least the Golf R stands out from the standard Golf

lol thats the old E Series lol which was always better looking than the Golf of the same era anyways.

If you're talking M135i completely disagree, the latest F20/21 like the E Series always looked/looks spot on. I think the reason alot of journalists slate the 1er is it doesn't conform to the Eurobox look as the Golf etc. Not knocking the Golf its a steady Eddy car. To me the 1er like my previous E89 always look that bit different in a dull car market in that price bracket.

The M235i is appealing to me alot more, end of the day its about driver enjoyment.

Always love this Chris Harris comparison

Shows the capability of the 1er to a tee, hence why I asked if the Golf has the same underpinnings :?

I think the Golf definitely has the more resolved styling at the front Mr W. The front of the 1er is pretty ugly due to those headlights, although the M-sport package does lessen the impact, I think. Front excluded, there isn't a lot to choose between them in reality. So I suppose you could say I think the golf looks better overall but neither particularly set the pulse racing.

Still both are excellent VFM and rightly stand out as class leaders. The 1er will be quicker though if that is important.

In three door guise the 1er to me looks alot more svelte and coupe like than the Golf, they look pretty good with 19s fitted.

Definitely not an ugly car.

Tim.

I can take the 1er from all angles until i see the front , then for me it goes quickly downhill
I'm just not a fan at all of the current 1 series from the front , it certainly can't be described as good looking or well styled

& by the looks of this spyshot for next year things aren't about to improve anytime soon

But then some would think the Alfa Brera is an ugly car  Its all personal taste.

I would imagine the 1ers facelifted front end will tie in with the 2 and 3 Series corporate look which will look better but I find it fine and wouldn't put me off buying again. No car is perfect, I always found my E89s rear its worse aspect and looked awkward whereas the 3/4 view it looked lovely. The Golf is just too bland to me so the drive would have to be superlative to tempt me, maybe it is :? . The Astra GTC VXR looks much better to me.

Yep i appreciate beauty is in the eye of the beholder Tim , as long as everyone is content with their choice then it's happy days

Just ordered one of these littles devils  as my new project. The Revo stage 1 map should see 0-60 times around 4secs which is just ridiculous. There regularly clocking 3.8/3.7 secs on the DSG model :o

Probably under 5% of those "sold" will be purchased at that figure , nearly all on PCP or lease so the actual ownership cost for 2 years can around £4k a year which many folks will lose in value on their bought car
Never gone that route myself but can see the temptation on the Golf R finance deals
