Might be rearranging the Zermatt Household cars ( M not part of the equation ) this year so took a Golf R on Friday- I have to say its along time since I've driven a car where every review has feted it with such universal praise - Evo, Car, Chris Evans and Clarkson rave about it. had one out over some back roads and i would concur its one heck of a car for the money and really shifts . The stand out feature is how it gets that power down - really flatters the driver . The VW salesman said that since it had come out GTI sales had slumped everyone is going for the R. Ive not driven the M135i but i can see why the Golf R has bested it in most reviews recently - the mix of the pace, ride and interior quality (OGs priority) would take some beating.Suspension ( one i drove had the regular dampers) is really resolved and much better than the hard as nails stuff usually fitted by Audi.
Its never going to compete with a Z4M in terms of character but ill be honest getting in the Zed after driving it - the Zed initially felt a little sluggish - on paper the M is quicker but the Golf feels so bomb proof it inspires massive confidence.
i know a lot of said 30k for a Golf is a lot but take the badge of it and say 30k for a 300bhp 0-60 in 5.2 seconds 4wd German Sports car and it sudddenly seems a bit of a bargain. Waiting list...... 20 weeks.
Anyone needing a more practical alternative to the Z4M should have a look - I was mightily impressed.
