Golf R

Might be rearranging the Zermatt Household cars ( M not part of the equation ) this year so took a Golf R on Friday- I have to say its along time since I've driven a car where every review has feted it with such universal praise - Evo, Car, Chris Evans and Clarkson rave about it. had one out over some back roads and i would concur its one heck of a car for the money and really shifts . The stand out feature is how it gets that power down - really flatters the driver . The VW salesman said that since it had come out GTI sales had slumped everyone is going for the R. Ive not driven the M135i but i can see why the Golf R has bested it in most reviews recently - the mix of the pace, ride and interior quality (OGs priority) would take some beating.Suspension ( one i drove had the regular dampers) is really resolved and much better than the hard as nails stuff usually fitted by Audi.

Its never going to compete with a Z4M in terms of character but ill be honest getting in the Zed after driving it - the Zed initially felt a little sluggish - on paper the M is quicker but the Golf feels so bomb proof it inspires massive confidence.

i know a lot of said 30k for a Golf is a lot but take the badge of it and say 30k for a 300bhp 0-60 in 5.2 seconds 4wd German Sports car and it sudddenly seems a bit of a bargain. Waiting list...... 20 weeks.

Anyone needing a more practical alternative to the Z4M should have a look - I was mightily impressed.

Love Golfs....my first true love....my first 3 cars were Golfs...

Look at this one.....£40,000

Just can't see people spending this kind of money......

Golf's :) Love em ! Still have a MK5 R32 on my to do list
The new 300bhp Golf R looks stunning & on paper appears unbeatable /seats 4 easily , 0-60 under 5 seconds :o 4wheel drive & average 40mpg :?
With lease deals sub £300 a month apparently they are flying off the VW shelves which should mean a good amount filters down in the coming years .
If you believe the net talk then sales of the current GTi model are almost non existent by comparison .

I tend to discard much of the reviews I read as they tend to be very biassed and very subjective, but I was pleasantly surprised by the R. The older model is a fair bit slower than the latest but the new ones are far from cheap - but are seriously quick (about the same on paper as the M if you get the dsg) but something just didn't gel with me - Probably because I've never been a fan of hot hatches let alone 4wd cars and there's something about the VW interiors that has never sat right with me either, and then there's the buzzing 4-pot which isn't to my taste. Not the car for me but a very good machine nonetheless.

Worth trying the equivalent Seat. Is it the Leon Cupra R? It's as quick, a bit cheaper and was quicker round Cadwell in an Autocar video recently, indicating it handles better.

these are awesome, i keep seeing a blue 4 door model outside my neighbours house, not only do they look class, they go like stink, you've got the All weather usability of the AWD, i would love one, my company car is up for renewal soon and I'm REALLY tempted to get one, but these along with the fas tRs hatchback audi's will have people smashing your door in at night for the keys, very desirable.

OP you car probably would feel flat after such a small capacity motor with large turbo , it will have some serious TQ figures I'm guessing , more than the z4m 3.2 I'm guessing BUT.... the s54 has a very deception power band and its only when you actually d a pull next to a really fast car you realise its a punching very well..

the golf R is imo the most desirable and capable hatch we've seen for a good while and the cupra R version is also awesome, but for the extra few K id have the residuals and awd golf R.

When you say underpinnings.
Floor pan?
Suspension?
Brakes?
Tyres?
Why would you hope not?
Audis always ride harder on the front end.

The S3 on paper always looks brilliant but doesn't seem to do so well compared to the M135i.

The Golf R appeals for its all weather capability but unsure for driving appeal. Would like to try one back to back with my 1er :)

Tim.

I test drove a new GTi a couple of months back as a possible replacement for the wife.

The interior and drive was fantastic, much better then the mk4 i owned 14 years ago.

Get down the showroom then!

That could be dangerous and only had the M135i 6 weeks or so.

I do like VWs as had a Passat years ago but the Golf does look so dull, at least 1er looks more interesting so to speak.

To the uninitiated the 135i is just the smallest BM at the bottom of the BM tree with the standard fayre of skirts & badges that now confuse even the most BMW range savvy :o i appreciate it will go like a scalded squirrel but at least the Golf R stands out from the standard Golf
