Going to Rome...

Talking of trusting trip advisor, the hotel has 700 reviews and a rating of 4.5 out of 5. Seems pretty good to me. I think I will just book it. Can't be assed going into town tomorrow... And if I don't get a better deal then I bet the one I have found will be gone. Sod's law. Stand by wallet :D

Glad I booked it this evening - already gone up a hundred quid in 3 hours and now flying from Heathrow instead of Gatwick :roll:

Anyway, we're off to see the Pope and some lion-eating Christians - hooray !
 
Another tip if you were planning on going inside The Vatican look at the Dark Rome tour. You go in after closing times at night. It's only on certain days. We did it last time and was well worth it.

Actually, those Dark Rome tours look good. Quite fancy Pompei, but not there long enough. Think we might do the full access colosseum tour though - I remember being really frustrated you couldn't get to any of the interesting bits, but with this lot you can. T'ain't cheap though :o
 
Do it. Wee J will find it good because its night time and no crowds and if you tell him some spooky/ghost stuff (even if you make it up!) he'll not get bored hopefully!

Get the Roma Pass, it saved lots of queuing at St. Peters and the Colluseum and wasn't that expensive if you took advantage of most of the entries included, plus the unlimited open top tour bus and metro pass.

Taxi's are expensive, so I'd get used to being on the metro.
Make sure you have plenty of change for toilets as this nearly cost me dearly! The toilets in the metro stations are the least desirable I've been in (especially for paid ones!), but good if you're in need.
 
You can buy this Roma Pass when you get there, right ?

Thing is, we were going to pay for a special tour of the colosseum that gets us into the lower levels and the highest teir... But it is extortionately expensive. I guess the pass would be good just for St Peters, the tour bus and the metro though.

Not only expensive, they're pretty mental. Coming back from the Sushi restaurant last night, taxi driver was doing well over the limit... :o
BTW- if you are in to sushi (there's only so much Italian cuisine you can take) sushisen is pretty good (www.sushisen.it)

Plenty of Zs thought did not see many 3.0L.

Another vote for Villa Borghese! some of the sculpture in there is amazing!

When you say the Vatican, you mean the museums, right ? The 13 year old with us may not have the patience required... We'll be doing St. Peter's first thing Saturday, then all the other attractions / sights round there. Then the coliseum, fora and palatine hill on Sunday. Figured St Ps may be a bit busy on the sabbath :-D

We'll fill in the gaps with a bus tour, wandering, the Ferrari store, and at least one pizza in a piazza with a large chianti, lol

Thanks for all the tips guys. Now I have to put up with 24hrs of Mrs B packing for a 3 day trip *sigh*
 
Hi.

I stayed at the Kolbe last year! Location is really good. Have you upgraded to the hot tub room thing. Whilst it's very nice, don't think its a proper hot tub. Its more like a big bath with bubbles haha, and I didn't think it was quite worth the extra increase in price. It is a very nice hotel though - But if you are like me and my other half... we were hardly there!

There's a cute little Italian shop just up the road to get fresh bread etc :-).

We went for 5 nights. for 2 of those we just walked around and found a restaurant and we were dissapointed. Try and avoid touristy areas for food as they aren't that impressive. Go on trip advisor and find out where the locals dine e.g.

Get the receptionist to book for you, and get them to explain you are english. They will be more than accomodating when you get there.
We also found a foundue place which the name escapes me at the moment. And that was delicous too.

I wont explain all the attractions, but keep an eye out for a liquor shop near the travi fountain. Its on a corner, and we went in there as we saw two police men having a shot. We came out steaming drunk by accident without spending any money!
 
Also, just walk about. Theres loads to discover. We must have "accidently" walked into about 4 local churches off the main street and even they are amazing.
