Glass topped Coupe anyone?

It is just a panel tho, does it add much structural strength? Its literally just siliconed in from looking at six speeds thread, but the overhang to place the panel in is quite deep so It would need some work around or you would see the bare metal, then the roof lining. Big job.
I agree, I can't see that the panel adds any strength to the structure. Particularly looking at the panel itself, there's no cross-bracing so it would just twist anyway. As far as the bare metal showing is concerned I was thinking of a heavy tint the same as the sun protection glass so don't think it would show that much.

If the glass loses all structural rigidity in a crash / roll, i.e. by shattering or even just deforming like a windscreen, then surely you may as well be in a roadster without roll bars ? I'd have thought the roof gives quite a lot of the structural strength given the coupe was developed from the roadster, or is the chassis totally different ?

s**t hadnt thought about that :fightwall: Hens why im not an engineer haha

I hadn't thought of that either. It's hard to say what role the panel plays but I guess, as is the case with most non-monocoque designs, every panel fulfils some kind of load-bearing or crumple zone duty, even if it is minor. The panel isn't crossed-braced, but the surrounding frame might rely on it being present (to a degree) for its integrity.

So the simple question for Half Colin is... are you intending to roll your coupe onto its roof in the near future? :D

I have 2 cars with panoramic roofs.

Apparently its even stronger than thin.

Or so I am told.

The strength is longitudinally not direct impact.

Well the coupe is based on the roadster but with the pillars adding more structural strength...?

I think if the rear and side pillars provide the strength and the glass is 'proper' roof glass (whatever that is) then it should be fine.

...... but what would the insurance companies make of it?

At night it would look quite cool with the interior lights on, making the glass roof more visible!

Coupe trying to be a roadster... prob give them a discount in their premium for seeing sense

So all cars that have sunroofs / glassroofs are trying to be Roadsters?

Some of you need to stop commenting on coupe threads. This s**t is getting boring

I think there has been only one lighthearted pop on here so far. Certainly my comment wasn't intended to suggest that coupe owners wanting to do this should get a roadster, it was an analogy and a question as part of a discussion.

Wow that's pretty cool, if ... if I had a coupe I would get this mod

Although I wonder how much that guy on z post is going to charge? Looks like he is doing a good job

Same s**t from the same pricks every thread.

I take it you don't have a roadster then?

I've had two Z4 Roadsters

PG, that's exactly what I think when I read some of the posts on here. like being back at school.

I've been reading this thread with interest because I think it would be a pretty cool mod and, if I'm honest, I have only seen a couple of jokey references from roadster owners - certainly nothing to provoke an extreme reaction such as yours.

I can only presume that you've had a bad day and this was the proverbial straw - we're all supposed to be friends on here and any 'digs' are not meant with any sort of malice, and are more the sort of banter you have with your mates down the pub

Wow that escalated quickly. World record for toy discharging?

Anyway, looking forward to seeing how the zpost project turns out. Fair play for giving it a go.
