glass fell off my wing mirror!

Need some help please guys. I got my new glass including the heating element (stuck on back of glass), connectors, and plastic back plate. So I removed the old backing and am left with this:

But I can't figure out what I need to do next. Do I remove this big plastic bit? I can't see how to. I tried sticking my mirror onto this bit but it won't go flush. Here's what I have:

Any help much appreciated!

not 100% sure, but I would remove the plastic bit from the wing mirror - should be a slide ring type fitting. Then clean up the back of the part in the top pic to get the remainder glue off and then just stick the new glass onto the back. The other plastic part on the left shouldn't be needed if the other part still in the wing mirror comes out ok and you can fit back fine.

As I said not 100% sure so maybe others might have an opinion but I think that's what I would do

I changed both mine as one fell out while driving and the other was loose. I got mine from ebay like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Z4-02-08-passenger-side-wing-electric-mirror-glass-/270698157536 and these just clip on. I have had them on for a month and they seem fine, not moving at all.

Hey all. My passenger glass was wobbling and so I've taken the glass off - it was clearly right on the edge. The black heating pad is now exposed until I glue the glass back on - will this be okay if it rains?

Also, have seen a few mentions of contact adhesive - is superglue okay?

Just an update to say thanks - it was indeed the slide ring fitting (I had looked online and was under the impression there were tabs somewhere I had to push in so wasted a lot of time there). Then I could just attach the new heating element and clip the new assembly on top.

I love this place, I noticed my pax mirror slightly vibrating as I drove along, having read this topic I knew that the glass falling off was imminent so I took a hairdryer & warmed up the little adhesive that was still holding it on & re-stuck it back on as it should have been from the factory using UHU.

My drivers side wing mirror glass has come off. Luckily I noticed it wobbling so stopped and gave it a little pull and it fell out into my hand. It was hanging on by the smallest piece of glue.
Quick look at this forum and I have the solution. Glue it back in.
I went for Unibond repair extreme as it says it is water resistant, can stick most materials and can tolerate temperatures from minus 50'C to plus 120'C. Cleaned both faces, applied glue matched up and held in place with some rubber bands and two pieces of kindling wood. It allows repositioning for up to 5 minutes, and says completely cured in 48 hours.
Only out of pocket £6.49 and enough glue left to do quite a few more mirrors - I shall be keeping a close eye on the passenger side mirror from now on.
Interestingly when inspected closely, the glass is reflects on both sides and if you hold it up to your eye you can see through like a pair of mirrored sunglasses. The line between the flat part and the curved part is in fact clear but looks black when stuck in place as the part it is stuck to is black.

Hi all drivers side came off one day but plate behind it remained to I just stuck it on, passenger side however was shaking so I took it off but this time the glass and back pad stayed together which left me with this

There was a pad there before, do those two surfaces meet flush? Can I just glue there?

Mine did the same a few weeks back, noticed a wobble on the mirror and on closer inspection found the glass had peeled away from the heat pad.

Found some no more nails seems to work a treat.

Quick tip though, if you use white glue, keep it away from the line in the glass otherwise you'll see the line turn white which could be annoying if you're a bit OCD.

I have auto dimming in all my mirrors. Is it a different structure?
Seems they vibrate slightly.

All of you who have seen them fall out, was these mirrors auto dimming?

My understanding is that the auto dimming (chromatic) mirrors have not been falling off as they are fixed differently.

In the last 6 months both mirrors have fallen off. I replaced the first through the garage £££, where can I buy a replacement glass? Loss of driver's mirror makes for a dangerous situation!

Agree, it just seems to be the normal versions.

Another one to add to the list. Noticed it whilst I got onto the M56 this morning, it stayed put until I got off the motorway and could remove the mirror before it dropped and smashed. Time to find some glue.

OK All,

Mirror arrived - Pretty much identical to the old one, comes with a backing pad, so sticks straight on. Very well done.

A bit of advice though - Make sure you get it exactly straight as it is a 'stick once only' thing, and it doesn't come off. I was slightly off, and now can't adjust the mirror fully, so it's coming off and another one going on (d'oh !)
