glass fell off my wing mirror!

I had the dreaded mirror wobble last week whilst on the A1 and used a service station to repair. Had re-stuck the glass previously (3 years ago) so carried a small tube of glue and a couple of adhesive strips in the boot expecting it to happen again - job jobbed (until next time!)

My manual says the mirrors are heated "At temperatures below a certain limit... while the engine is running or the ignition is switched on".

I can't find any technical literature specifically but the Central Body Electrics mentions the temp sensor but only that it activates the washer jet heating.

Your manual tells fibs! The wing mirrors are permanently heated regardless of ANY temperature influences and this is standard on all Z4's up to at least 2005/55 plate.

ye my coupe seems always on as per manual

Automatic heating*
Both exterior mirrors are automatically heated
when the engine is running or the ignition is
switched on.

I'll give mine a feel next time I drive. Does seem a bit stupid to heat them all the time when there is a temp sensor!
My drivers glass was wobbly and I stuck it with silicone sealant. No dramas since and I can't imagine it drying out anytime soon.

well i think the heated washer jets are on a temp sensor (i believe ) so dont know why they wouldn't with mirrors

I bought from the site Marlon recommended, fitted it - works OK. Not bad for a quick fix @ £10

In the interests of full disclore there are a few negatives:

1. It doesnt fit perfectly, there's a clear difference between the cut of the glass on the OEM vs the replacement. I think the OEM 'slotted' in better.

2. The mirror glass is a little strange - i actually find it harder to focus through the replacement than OEM, almost like a cheap mirror or something. It might be that it has a strange angle on the bend (for blind spot) that gives it a weird out of focus feeling.

I'm not sure if my previous glass was 'connected' to a heated mirror wire, i can see a wire under the old fitting (it's also hard to tell what the old fitting actually is, vs which bit is glue resedue, or which bit is a film that was once stuck to old glass. Really not that clear.

FWIW i'll most likely ring and order from BMW and see if i can get a better finish.

My car is in for Inspection 2 today and I asked them to secure the driver side mirror which has started to wobble. They quoted me £109 for a replacement instead. I think I'll buy some glue!

Double sided tape - it allows some movement during the heating and cooling.

That's the trouble these days - they don't "mend" things ! In this case a simple pair of scissors and some tape and ten minutes of time would have it sorted.

They have to warrant the repair though - and they won't with the tape

Just lost the passenger side mirror today  , ordered one off eBay for £6.89 inc delivery. I know its cheap but hopefully it will do the job just as well

HA! My nearside mirror got the wobbles last week, so I carefully puled it off. Read back through this feed to when my driver side mirror suffered the same. I was able to search through the drawer (same drawer every house has with all the old string, rubber bands, torch bulbs, travel plugs etc.) and find the glue I used last time. Good job I gave its name in my post 2 years ago. Cleaned both faces, glue, rubber bands to hold it in place with two different bits of kindling wood while glue sets. Job done. :D

Yup, my drivers side mirror fell out yeaterday while polishing it! Managed to catch it and stuck it back on with double sided mammoth tape. Hope it lasts. Never happened to me before FFS!

My glass is now very loose, 56 plate car. I was having to hold it when driving yesterday and I can tell you that the heating element is always on! It was 22 degrees yesterday and my finger was getting hot!

Will purchase some double sided tape today to fix. Think that sounds better than glue.
