i had the same when my car was in warranty an bmw said it wasnt coverd an they tried to charge 120+vat for the glass an fitting on top, so ebay came to the rescue for me to with glass for £12 an you cant tell the difference
jobs a good one :D

How can they say it's not covered if it's still in warranty?

hi guys,

First post here and have to say great site.

I lost the passenger mirror om my z the other day, ordered a new one off ebay, comes as a whole unit, already mounted on the plastic. Any ideas I how I change it over?

Cheers fro down under

Hi - don't mean to raise an old thread, but I can see my mirror shaking a fair bit so would like to TRY and get it fixed before it falls off and breaks.

Can anyone let me know if putting glue on is fine? Any particular type of glue?

Also is it better to use glue or sellotape for this job. Your responses are appreciated - I can see it falling next time I shut the door!

Thanks

Thanks - I just pulled the mirror off and it was being held by a adhesive which was about 5mm wide - poor by any standard. The telltale sign was it's mega vibration while I was driving it - so that's something for other owners to look out for.

To be safe I've applied some heat & water resistant between the two. Let's see how long this lasts for...

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, so please be nice :D. This problem happened to me over the weekend - the glass just fell out when I closed the door! I too have been quoted £116 from BMW, and unfortunately I'm just out of the 3 year warranty. I think I'll do what you guys have done and buy some heat-proof glue and replacement glass price off eBay instead!

My question is this though - is the mirror/glass the shame shape on the Coupe 3.0 as it is on the convertible? I don't want to buy the glass on eBay and discover its for the convertible, not the coupe .

Thank a lot,
Rich

Hi and welcome to the forum, get a post up with your intro in the newbies section if you get a mo!

To answer your question, yes the glass is the same :) You should look at extending your warranty as it is reasonably good value for money and is obviously invaluable if you have any major issues!

Happy to have found this thread. Just noticed my drivers side mirror doing 'the wobble' on the way back from Suffolk yesterday. Time to break out the contact adhesive/pads and sort it out before the inevitable smash and resulting seven years bad luck.

Thought I'd do it now rather than think about it, plus take some pics as there may be people out there like me that don't relish the thought of pulling the mirror hard in case they break something.

Suffice to say it's all okay and as described above is a very simple fix. The mirror glass took some yanking to get to get it off but when removed revealed a patch of about 5cms/2inches where it had been glued at the factory.

The moving interior of the mirror has a black membrane across its entire face which I presume is the heating bit. I used All Purpose Bostik glue across the back of the mirror glass and the interior black membrane, before applying and holding firm for 5 minutes.

Will monitor for wobble, but fingers crossed it will hold fast and forever

Update: Just checked and it seems to be on there pretty solidly now. Proof will be in the driving based pudding.

This happened to me over the weekend, now wish I'd searched "mirror wobble" rather than thinking it was ok :( .

Just made my 1st ever eBay purchase  on drivers side Z4 mirror glass.

I read that there are some self adhesive pads you can get that are heat resistant? My next dumb question is are the mirrors heated on an M? how would I tell?

Many thanks,

T1b

all z4 wing mirrors are heated :D

I used contact adhesive which seems to be holding fine. others have used mirror adhesive

got it down at homebase.... bewildering amount of glues down there, got a bit confused and just bought the one that sounded the best without being hideously expensive...

How weird is this, just been out in the car and noticed that the mirrors were wobbling a wee bit but honestly didnt think anything of it.
Got home had a cuppa and a browse on the forum lo and behold first thing i saw was this post on the home page :o :o .
Just been out and fixed both my wobbly mirrors   .I used double sided foam tape, i use this for number plates and honestly this stuff is very sticky.
Shame on BMW yet again for shoddy tight arsed build quality.
But thanks to the best BMW forum yet again :D :D :D 8) .

Wish I hadn't ignored the wobble :( but the mirror has arrived (next day!) so I'll be grabbing some contact tonight and getting it stuck on.

Pitty the new mirror came complete with a back plate, but it's coming off ok so no worries :)

I'll let you know how I get on. :)

I've just joined the forum to thank you all for letting me know that this wasn't unique to me!

BMW are a pain, they make the best driveres cars (or did until emissions brought about all this turbo charging nonsense), but their quality control is too financially focused for my liking. How much would that extra dab of glue have cost? Would the reputation of BMW have been worth it? I think so!

I was watching my passenger mirror wobbling on the last run. Worried now! Perhaps I should pull it gently and see if it comes off rather than shopping for another later on... :(
