That's not good :(

Have you thought about retraining and doing something new?

well i have been applying for things i wouldnt normally but its getting someone to give you a chance

I was out of work for a while a few years back, I found that you have to really sell yourself along with networking which really helped as 80% of jobs are not advertised. I was flexible about moving areas and looking at other jobs. Through networking though I got a management job in the telecoms industry which wasn't even advertised. You have to try and keep positive, I know that is easier said than done, but we all have transferrable skills which other companies can utilise. Good luck with your search

Oxford uni always have jobs. I am sure it's the same for all university's. go to the Ox web page click staff top of page and have a look at what's there. They don't list them that well so have a good look. I am sure it's the same at others.... Good luck Nova.

I remember reading somewhere that car insurance costs a fortune too if you out of work.

You can't win :(

Should have said there is a huge range of jobs at a uni. From green keeper to a engineer like me accounting all sorts.

years back i was out of work, worked on a milk round and on building sites whilst retraining, even after retraining its hard to get a start, but chin up, something will turn up

The uk right now is a tough environment for finding a job whatever the skills .
My son completed his 4 years plumbing/gas with a company who would only pay him £5-20 per hour ( no need to pay minimum wage of £6.15 until aged 21) so he told them to stick their job ( i advised him to find another job first but youth being what it is  )
That was last september & all he's worked since then is 2 weeks in france for me & 3 weeks as a picker/packer 12 hour shifts on £7 hr .
He was prepared to stick at the packing job but they reduced his shifts from 4days a week to 3 , then 2 then 1 .
Since when he has applied for a new tescos (1150 applicants ) various driving jobs, postman & even caretaker at our local school
Fortunately he lives with us so his £56 jobseekers allowance is enough to get him by each week but he is despondent & does wonder what the UK has to offer the 20, & 30,s who are starting off in the workplace
You do need determination ,tenacity & keep faith in your own abilities . fingers crossed you will find something Nova  best of luck

Might be a good time to start out on his own? Before he gets a family , mortgage etc ?

Anyone considered a Teacher's training course ?

Last thought, and I hope I'm not stating the bleeding obvious...

Have you put your CV on Monster.com? A lot of friends have found work that way, and some very big companies incl the one I work for (Intel), do look on there.

I have just had a chat with a mate that is looking for a new job, pretty hard. He was a social worker but took a job with a local charity assisting young people in housing need. Ha! Unfortunately he was lied to. The job turns out to be landlord's arsehole assistant. Hassling kids that have nothing into paying yet more or putting them out on the street. It is a bent operation, pretending to be a charitable housing association while extorting the absolute maximum out of the housing benefit department and paying the directors very well. He has a mortgage and is in despair. The job is pretty much what he has spent his life fighting against. He would love to be able to jack it in.

Chin up, at least you are not extorting cash from the state by taking advantage of the most vulnerable.

in the 21st century? didn't think jobs like that existed now...

Dreadful. I was shocked. There is masses of paperwork, the local authority sponsor support workers for vulnerable adults. It all sounds very kosher. In practice it is another way that the charity leeches off the state while providing the absolute minimum. He was saying that the local homeless know his place of work as 'the debt flats'. :(

Best advice I can give is just get your C.V everywhere you can but always adjust it accordingly for the job. Also if you are dealing with agencies try and sound enthusiastic even if the role is not one you want they may have something else that interests you more. Good luck hope something comes up soon.

I was looking for engineering work 2 years ago in the North West when I finished uni, but had zero luck. Ended up finding work and moving to the midlands, and down here it's the complete opposite. Do you still live in Yorkshire? With your experience in the insurance industry it may be worth considering working in Manchester, Birmingham, London.

yep currently on Reed and Monster! its just crazy! every job seems to have had 100+ people apply

what's your CV like? (don't post it here!) a lot i see read more like a job spec than a CV - list what you have achieved, not the processes you follow.

lots of people who have worked for me gibber on about payrises, saying "i've done this job for X months...." when that's all they have done, just about. try making sure you include what you've actually added to the role.

Are you on LinkedIn?

It's like facebook but about work, I get quite a lot of jobs sent through to me on there

Good luck
