Getting A Job

Hi,

The latest trend if you want to impress, and I like it is to use PREZI to show off your CV.

I am using it to deliver lectures and its extremely good.

It will make you stand out and you will appear fresh and dynamic.

Lets face it, faced with 100's of applications they will definitely choose some that stand out and you will be one of them.

An example is here:

I wish you all the luck in your life.

Have you thought about a change of scene?

I did 3 ski seasons. I bet you could get a job now for a few months as people always get injured.

I absolutely loved it and it didn't cost me any money with the wages I earnt whilst out there. I actually came back with a lot of money in my bank from my last season, but that was a a resort manager.

Might help you let your hair down a bit before you get back and have another bash at the jobs in a refreshed state of mind.

Just playing devils advocate!

join the forces...

no seriously...there is something for everyone, even if you just wanted to do admin type things....

Nova2k7 :

This has turned into an essay, it's probably obvious but hopefully something of use in here...

I'm 25, and currently unemployed.

I worked in engineering for a couple of years after my degree but left the company last summer as I had had enough of the company, lack of opportunites etc. and I knew it wasn't what I wanted to be doing. I then started a new job later in the year (after a bit of travelling), but left after a couple of weeks because it was simply sales (but not advertised as such).

In december I was offered a job to train as an accountant (exactly what I want) but it doesn't start until September so I now need to fill the gap... what I'm currently working on.

Anyway Advice...

Some may seem obvious, some are more things I worked out as I went through the latter part of 2012.

- Firstly work out exactly what you want to, there's no point applying to something that you're not interested in or won't stay at for 5mins just because it's a job.

- Yes it's a numbers game... apply apply apply, but, adjust your CV/ cover letter to match each job and pick up on the skills and qualities in the add... don't just send a generic version to everyone.

- When applying online don't just apply and move onto the next one, if there is a phone number call them too... Especially dealing with recruitment companies - Twice I applied to a job and heard nothing, I then phoned them asking for more info about the role (and obviously selling myself) and they had me in for interview. Don't assume the recruitment consultant will identify your potential from glancing at your CV for a few moments. It's about selling yourself.

- There are lots of job sites, but many companies don't use them... so look at individual company sites... (this is where knowing what you're looking for helps). Phone the HR department, speak to people, ask for email addresses to send your CV etc.

- Following from the one above... just because a company doesn't advertise doesn't mean they won't hire - so get in touch, dig, the harder you work and put effort in, the less people you're up against.

You mentioned about the number of people showing up as applying to jobs online (I know that's depressing)... BUT... IT'S EASY TO APPLY TO JOBS SAT ON THE SOFA ON THE INTERNET, MOST PEOPLE DON'T PUT THE EXTRA EFFORT IN TO PHONE AND FIND THE JOBS THAT AREN'T THERE, and imo these days that's how to get ahead.

Just want to add something here .......

Work in the Oil Field in the North Sea both offshore and onshore is smoking and blowing right now and has never been buisier - Aberdeen is expecting to hire 120000 people in the next 5 years.

If anybody has ever been interested in that kind of stuff, now is the time to start looking. Google is a good place to start .......
Avoid agencies - look for major players .....
Oil Service Companies
Offshore Drilling Contractors
etc.

Ive worked in the sector since I was 22, thats liker errr 250 years ago, and all I can say ...... if you are prepared to work, its a rewarding place to be.

The oil Industry is a good one to be in..

Unfortunetly, Theres not much demand for software people like me in there!

Congrats, you must be over the moon.

I was in a similar position, but thankfully had some contacts that ended up being useful.

My first employer really took a big risk hiring me. At 21 just finished Uni no real experience and they employed me as the only graphic designer. Which at the time was fantastic I was put straight out of Uni into the recession, scary world. The first thing most businesses do is cut back on advertising, as a creative the worst possible thing, a lot of more experienced designers were being made redundant and younger out of uni people were getting the jobs because they could pay them half the amount. Looking back it was hard and scary, wasn't exactly what I wanted but ended up being really good experience. It only grew too so I started doing more complex things and my job description spiraled with half of it moving over to photography, again to save them money because it was cheaper for me to do it than them hire another photographer. But the experience is what I needed recently have just changed and started a new job with more freedom and it all came from that company taking a risk. But looking at current economy the story is much the same it was 3 years ago, which is a worry. I think being self employed is the way forward and hopefully will get there eventually.

Good people are out there. Really glad that you have found a new job and hopefully there will be a hierarchy system you can grow within.
