GEAR SELECTOR PROBLEM

I have a 2003 3.0i with SMG Transmission. When the gear selector is in neutral the dash shows 1. The car will not start. Shouldn't it be showing N on the dash as well as at the shifter. Has anyone had this problem or solved this before?

I’ve not had experience of an smg, however I’d start by seeing if any codes are stored in the car memory

Then I would be looking at the gear selector switch under the car which senses which gear vs which position the stick is in- may need a clean or reset

Hi there Artman. My SMG very occasionally does this. Make sure the door is shut, ignition off and then back on again, foot on brake pedal and try to move the gear selector to D. Then move it back to N pausing in between moves. Sometimes it takes a couple of goes or even moving across to R and back also.

That does sound a little more serious a problem Artman. Try disconnecting the battery for a while maybe ? Have you got a code reader like a C110 etc ? Any error codes may point you in the right direction ? Also, try getting in touch with SMG Society in Germany. https://www.smgsociety.com/
I've had dealings and purchased parts from them in the past.....they really know their stuff

When it first started acting up I got a code of 5E19. Then P1611 with the transmission fault gear symbol.
