Garage remote

Strange thing happened today and I cant explain it.
One of the garage door remotes stopped working, I opened it up to find a CR2032 battery in it so swapped it for a new one I had spare.
It still didnt work.
Instructions said it should have been 2 CR2016 batteries in it.
I opened the other remote and there was 2 CR2016 batteries in that one.
Both remotes were supplied with the door opener years ago and the batteries have never been replaced. I had to google how to open the remotes.
So to rule out a faulty remote I put the 2 CR2016 batteries into the one that stopped working and it worked. Tried the CR2032 battery in the other one and it doesnt work.

Why would the remote work with the CR2032 battery in it for 10 years and then suddenly stop and not even work with a new CR2032 battery?

Perhap someone is messing with your mind and swapped the batteries when you weren't looking.

Interesting. This happened to me quite recently and I haven't got as far as reading the instructions so only have a single working remote right now. When I can find the time to fix it I'll report back...

No it doesn't make sense as both CR2016 and 2032 are 3v batteries. So to 'double up' on a CR2016 would mean the remote should work on 6 volts. Adding DC batteries in series doubles the voltage output.

Unless it works on 3v but ideally needs 6v. Maybe your replacement 2032 was below the required voltage/ amperage because it's been sat around for a while. Googling both, the 2016 and 2032 are the same physical size apart from the thickness, as the 2032 has nearly 3 times the power of the 2016 (240ma to 90ma).

I think your remotes' electronics are not fussed by voltage, but are more affected by power/ amperage. They only need to send an IR signal after all.

Double the voltage, halve the power or current needed.

Edit: re-read the above ramblings and now confused myself! Basically your replacement CR2032 was duff IMHO! :D

Haven’t used remotes for 5 years now, use my phone. At least that always works :D

Possibly is duff. Been in a drawer for about 6 months, I think.
But the 2032 that was in the remote was there and working up until yesterday for 10 years, I would have thought that ANY newer 2032 would have been better and worked. The newer battery doesnt even light the led in the remote.

Not sure if we can do that with our closer and it would mean having to have the phone available to press a button as well. The remote is on the keyfob so always within reach.

Two 2016 is thicker than 1 2032 (not much but a little), so the contact points might have been pushed down a bit before to make the connection. Removing the 2032 might have put them back higher and not making contact. Voltage wise it makes no sense though, there was definitely only 1 2032 in there?

Voice control via Siri

We have flick buttons under the dash as well that only work when the phone is nearby. Saves thieves opening the garage door from within the car.

99.99% of all garage doors work with pulse signals so should work fine

Yip only one.
In case it wasnt clear in the jumble I wrote earlier, the remote that had the 2032 that stopped working now works with the 2 2016 batteries from the remote that still worked.
I will buy 2 2016 batteries and put them in the other remote and that should be everything fine.
Just strange that one had a 2032 and one had 2 x 2016 and a replacement 2032 wont work the remote.

Haven’t used remotes for 5 years now, as I have a footman to do those mundane tasks for me. At least he always works, as isn't allowed time off.
Sorted that for you matey! No, no, honestly, no thanks needed. :P

First world problems
Yeah my garage door opener only needs a bit of food and a birthday present each year. It also does all the cooking and washing and needs no batteries.
