Gaptech group buy!

Soldering is the best way to connect retrofit wires in the automotive sector...

That's a very bold statement!

I am an automotive electrical engineer, and we would never solder in a car! We always use pins and connectors, like OEM BMW connections.

I understand however that this isnt as easy to get hold of for most people. So your options are crimped bullet connectors from halfords, or soldering if you are confident you can do a good job!

"these scotch block connectors should be wiped off the face of the earth IMO they are a cause of so many electrical issues."

Agreed!

The least intrusive, but still secure electrical connection method that I know in these circumstances is to use a top E guitar string(electric guitar). This can be begged from a guitarist friend, if you have one, or can be purchased on ebay as a single string for about £1.50. The top E is the thinnest string but very strong. It should be cut into pieces of approx. 1 cm long and then soldered to the end of each of the 5 wires from the Gaptech module. As some strings are coated it may be necessary to abrade the length to allow the solder join to take and a good connection to be made with the loom wire. A small nick down to the wire in the sheath of each appropriate wire on the cars loom, allows the guitar wire to be pushed into this nick and down inside the sheath of the loom wire, thus making full contact along it's 1cm length with the wiring inside. A short length of insulating tape securing both wires together ensures that the join can't pull out. A bit unusual but works and does not involve cutting the loom wire itself.

I still agree that to cut the wire fully on the loom, slide a heat shrink tube on one wire, expose the wire on all 3 tips, solder all together and then slide the heat shrink over for insulation, is the strongest, most secure join.

Agreed with both statements but, there is like I said a limited amount of space for a pin connection block behind the console. The ash tray console part is a very tight fit!

This is why I suggested soldering over scotch connections or crimps!

Like I said its personal preference and your car to do as you will... Good luck with your install guys whatever install method you choose :)

Haha! Cheers all - currently enjoying my holiday funded from this very kind forum! 8)

My payment is being made tomorrow, so will be in the same boat as all of you - but he seems reputable, and PayPal does offer protection if nowt turns up. Will email them to confirm whether the units are in stock, and what estimated delivery times are.

What about this sort of thing for connecting the wires?

I think i was one of the first to pay and have had no correspondence back either. :(

A very swift reply, and some good news from Gaptech:

Hi.
As of 8:00 PM last night 14 people had paid, those 14 units were all tested and packaged yesterday and have been shipped today.
All those that have paid since then will get their units tested and packaged today and shipped tomorrow.
I always try to dispatch the day after payment is received and delivery to UK address normally takes 24-48 hours.
As I print each person’s address label from PayPal they should receive an email from PayPal informing them that their purchase has been dispatched, I do not normally send any additional emails.
The first modules should start to arrive tomorrow.

Hope this alleviates any fears!

Would do the job perfectly well but a bit crude and heavy duty. The pin connectors designed for low voltage use are what the car industry use, like the small white 6 pin connector on this link https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/s/electrical/multi-pin-plugs. Just leave one pin unused.

I didn't receive any email, but checked the purchase on my paypal and it does have confirmation it's been posted on there.
I believe you only get emails from paypal if your account Is set up to do so....
