Full resrpay time!

185k miles in, I think it's time for a full respray.

At a distance, it looks fine after a good wash but it needs some attention. Lots of stone chips, laquer damage and just started to get some corrosion to the left of the driver's door.

What kind of money would I be looking at for a full respray based on past experience?

The colour is "carbon-schwarz" and I think i'd go for the same again, or maybe a metalic dark grey.

I'm midlands based so if anyone has any recommendations, feel free.

I had my carbon black E86 done at the start of this year. Nothing like a fresh paint job.
You will be looking at £3k for a proper job

I didn’t pay that as I work in the trade and it was done at a business associates body shop.
I supplied new rear quarters as mine had started to blister so wanted it done properly and replace the panes rather than fill.

Best just to visit a few places and see what quotes you get.

No mate. You’d get a respray on a z4 for £3k retail.
If you read what I said I didn’t pay that. Infact I paid less than 50% of that.

It is your money and up to you how to spend it, but from an economic point of view, an expenditure of £3000 will not increase its value by £3000. Changing the colour would involve further cost. You could repaint the side with rust, the door, front, and back wing to make her look more presentable. Black is a very forgiving colour regarding paint-matching!

But to put it in perspective: this is the car Chris had always wanted. After years of ownership he was quoted well over £3k to sort the suspension, but we managed it for about a third of that. So he got to keep his cherished car, regardless of the mileage etc. I think that means quite a lot to him. So asuming he wants to keep it for another 12 years or more, then splashing £3k on a respray isn't a massive amount.
I don't think the carbon black would be as easy to colour match as a base black.
The car is well beyond monetary value at this point so what the hell, get it sprayed and carry on enjoying it. Life isn't a rehearsal!

Just had a quote of £963.06 for a front bumper respray and small repair to one sideskirt (blended and not fully painted).

I decided after that, that some small scrapes and scuffs add ‘character’…

If you think that's expensive (I think so too), come to NL, where getting rock chips fixed and a very shallow scratch touched up would be around €1200,- based on a quote I got. Which is just silly money.

If I could get a full respray done the way @j3nks79's respray seems to have been done (disassembly, cleaning, priming, multiple coats (I assume)) I'd very much consider it for £3k...

I had my Red Z4 Roadster repainted the same colour coming up to 3 years ago - local small bodyshop (Midlands) who did it as a side project over the winter. Brilliant job and still looking good. Cost about £2500 but of course the shuts and under bonnet didnt need touching - you would be hard pressed to see it had been repainted which is the sign of a good job - message me if you want there details.
