Fuel economy

Mines saving me incredible amounts of money on fuel.......it's sat on my driveway jacked up with a wheel removed :(

On a serious note, on the journey home I sat in a 50 zone then took it easy in a 70 and the obc showing 38/39 mpg! I then moved upto an indicated 80 for the remainder of the journey down the a1, including a spirited jaunt with an m3 and I got home showing 31mpg!

Z4m - been doing a lot of motorway travel of late - 32mpg ...yes 32. 8)

I took pics at 30 mpg as I was amazed , then pushed up to 32 ...cruising at 70 in 6th .

thats a z4m record!! lol....

I had 33.6mpg out of mine on a run to manchester and back, and 36.5mpg on the A69 to Newcastle but was stuck behind like 12 lorries at about 50mph

Wowzers! What was your average speed? Did you use cruise control?

Such a gay topic in hindsight!!

Also why do the non M owners feel the need to post up about their cars! This is the M section??! MPG for a 3.0 is not exactly useful in this thread! :?

a gay topic indeed, jollity abounds in hearing of <20 mpg for us 2.0L owners.

PS
I have no interest in which forum subsection I reply - 'new posts' is my default query.

I was averaging between 70-75 there was no traffic and at night, it is also downhill most of the way down to Manc from Cumbria. No cruise, cruise actually reduces MPG because it brakes the engine when going down hill to keep a constant speed using more fuel.

Like I said was doing 50ish the second time all the way for 70 miles so that why the 36.5.

But im smooth with acceleration and dont feel the need to hoon it around all the time, I find it a very satisfying cruiser, plus being 23 and in the M I get pulled over all the time so gives them less of an excuse. Had it 5 months must have been pulled 6-7 times. But I do like to give it a hoon around the lake roads and then I get about 21-23 but averaging 26mpg over 3500 miles so quite happy with the bad boy! Always had a moto to drive by.. with power comes responsibility. Having a few close friends loosing their lives when we were younger hit me hard so I respect the car and its speed.

I find it interesting hearing what the 3.0 brigade get in comparison, makes me even more sure I made the right decision ;)

I average 23 MPG but it's used for short runs and spirited drives. Record was an indicated 34 MPG from Liverpool to Stow on the Wold travelling down very early morning so sat on motorway doing 70 all the way.

It is amazing that you can get a genuine 30+ MPG on long runs if you're just getting from A to B and not in a hurry. Great engine in a great driver's car as we all know :)

+1 incredible all round motor... I can just hear all the sighs from the non M owners

Cotswolds to Winnersh and return today. Averaged 35 on the way down, dropped to 32.7 by the time I was home. Can't complain at that for 3.4ltr and 300hp :)

Tapatalking...

I'd love to have an M// and the fuel wouldn't bother me, but the road tax and servicing costs would be too much :(. A few years and I'd love one though!

The road tax is only £200 more which works out to an extra £16 a months and the servicing costs aren't much more than a 3.0 if you look around. Lifes too short

With the extra outlay for the car, then all the other costs added on it soon mounts up and it's currently sometime I unfortunately can't afford.
I am very much live for the moment, but I don't live beyond what I can afford.

I few years when prices have dropped maybe. Insurance is an extra £100, from what I have read servicing is aprox 1.5x more, then consumables such as brakes tyres etc, tax. I really couldn't do it. But one day I will!!

Well it depends. A service 2 can be as little as £500 and as much as £1000 depends where you go, every 2 years or 14k. Oil and brake fluid services are £300 odd, tyres will be the same as the 3.0 if they are 18s so between £600-1250 depending on your preference of rubber. Brakes you shouldn't really have to worry about the rotors but the pads if you hunt around you can get good prices on them too. Thats about it all covered apart from fuel and £100 for an upgrade in insurance to an M is pittance!! But being young my insurance is quite a lot. And like I said a 3.0l is £265 for tax the M is £460 so an extra £16 a month.. or £4 a week... lol Prices are very low for the roadsters with them starting at about 11k and the coupe around £14.5 but for good examples £13k for the roadster and £15-16 for a coupe. Bit more if you buy from BMW with a warranty.

Its one of those things the numbers per year on average it costs about £1200 more for me to own the Z4M so it made sense. thats including tax insurance, fuel and consumables all in. Only do 6-7k a year tho.

I do around 10-11,000 a year milage wise with a 20 mile commute to and from work.I appreciate it's only £1200 or so a year extra to own one, but still £1200 I dnt have. Being the same age as yourself I would suffer the same insurance premiums as you too. Although I thought £620 quote for an M wasn't bad at all, all things considered. In the back of my head I always have this 'if something should break it will cost more to repair' over the 3.0.
I wouldn't mind an M in either coupe or roadster, if I were to have the 3.0 it would have to be coupe though.

I currently drive a focus ST, of which I am comfortable affording, and wouldn't want anything that costs much more to run.

I have just been through the same decision making process between an M and a 3.0si. I do typically 15k a year and this, along with the fact I found a 3.0si with only 16k within budget made my decision for me. I got a newer, lower mileage car which is significantly cheaper to run (given I do highish mileage) for the same
money as an M. I get 31mgp reliably from the 3.0si and that's 80% motorway and 20% hooning. You need to do your own calcs, but the more miles you do the bigger the cost gap between the M and a 3.0 becomes, but the performance gap will always remain the same.
