Fuel economy

I have a 320d for commuting, so my ///M is purely for socialising, pleasure, and a few track days a year. I live in London and drive a mix of really heavy traffic, motorways, and country lanes.
I used to see an average of 19mpg, but I recently changed the exhaust back boxes...now my average is 14-15mpg
On long 85-100+mph transcontinental journeys I've averaged 25mpg, and on the track 9mpg.
All that said, I freely admit that my right foot is somewhat heavy and I really, really love my car :D
Unless you would be counting every penny to stretch to the ///M, test drive them both and listen to your heart...

Bough My Z for fun. Occasional commutes , on the finest summer days only. The odd track day. Runs out with the local PH crew. Summer bimbling to the pub for a meal with the other half. Plus a few longer runs to Europe when the mood takes. Ave fuel consumption thus far is 23mpg. 30+ is easily achievable on a run, with the top down, at 75-80. On track it's 8-9. Over all I’m very impressed with the fuel consumption for a humble BM that can stay with some very exotic metal all day long.

Loved reading your posts. Encouraging that the figures are generally better than the official 23mpg. I've just come from a Jaguar XF which reckoned on 42mpg - I'd like to meet the driver who managed that as I averaged 30!

Anyway, just back from a test drive of a M. Heart wins. Life's too short - its the reason I work - only here once (and all the other clichés). Can't wait to hear that roar again.

Thanks for the advice. :driving:

I'm 99% town driving.

I average 14.4 in town
And one the rare occasions i'm on dual carriageway i get around 26mpg.

Only time i got 300+ to a tank was the day i bought it!
You're a heavy-footed wild haggis though :poke:

That is pretty bad Aliv6
Do you sit at every traffic light on the way and then launch it when the light goes green? :poke:

Not saying I don't occasionally do that.... but I'm getting 21-22mpg around Newcastle. Better than the 840 which got 17ish :driving:

TBH I see this on a saturday morning getting out of town.

But usually get 240 - 260 miles out of tank so whats that 23 - 24 mpg

Thanks for all your comments. I've just come from a Jag XF where the official combined mpg was quoted at 42mpg - I never came close so worried if the Ms quoted 23 was going to be more like 15 in reality. You've reassured me this won't necessarily be so (unless I get very heavy footed) - heart wins the day. M on its way. Thanks for the advice.

 Good choice life is too short, thats why I bought mine but I'm only 23 :P

I am having a hard time driving mine slow. Only had it for two weeks, but so far managing to extract only around :| 320km out of a tank. (about 200 miles)

lol @ Haggis!

Not many traffic lights! It's a 7mile comute which takes 45mins. Mainly traffic nose to tail, 30mph limit all the way, be lucky if i get to that speed a couple of times.

I get between 150-170 to a tank.

Just to muddy the choice a bit further, you may want to look into the Alpina variant... always good to have more Alpinas on the forum 8)

Ye but once you've had a go in an M all the other variants of the Z feel a bit tame ;)

go for the m i have had one 4 months now all country driving booting it get on average 24 -26 mpg well happy but petrol dont really come in to it they are amazing cars just get one you wont look back :driving:

best ive seen from mine is 25 (and yes the system has been recalibrated to the larger injectors).... with 1psi of boost showing in 6th @ 75-80ish it seems really quite frugal.... much better than i ever imagined tbh...... i think for their performance, these engines are really quite good.

Z4m - been doing a lot of motorway travel of late - 32mpg ...yes 32. 8)

I took pics at 30 mpg as I was amazed , then pushed up to 32 ...cruising at 70 in 6th .

thats a z4m record!! lol....

My OBC says 29.4mpg. EDIT - which is c.26/27mpg calculated

I used to get more when I was using as a daily driver, but now it's mostly used as a weekend toy, the MPG suffers a bit

23mpg in the M, I seldom get to make longer higher speed journeys. It's worth it for the occassion and noise over my previous 3.0i. :driving:

Recently started using BP Ultimate ...seems to be getting better mpg.

Made up for it with blast on some twistees on the way home... 8)

In my old E46 M3 I averaged over 30mpg during 30,000 miles of commuting between Glasgow and Edinburgh, mostly struggling to get above 50 on the M8. I did this commute for a year and was equally impressed by how good the ecomony can be when dawdling ... mostly ;)
