Front suspension collapse ?

Got a jack, apart from springs, spring compressors (have a Halfords socket set) what else am i likely to need ?

Stick your VIN number into an online BMW spec checker (AKA "VIN decoder") to confirm which suspension was fitted to the car from the factory.

Then put your VIN number into realoem.com and then find the front suspension section for an exploded parts diagram with part numbers of possible spring options.

I couldn't find one that worked, i did find a post on here that said all 2004 Z4 3.0 cars came with the mpsport springs as standard so ordered the Suplex front coil springs part:6248. Just checked your link and it does have the msport springs

phone up bmw give them your reg and they will tell you what suspension you have - if you visit them they will print it out the cars's spec sheet for you

If you can turn the spring in situ, look for 3 lightblue dabs of paint in a row on the spring. If you have these, they point to M sport springs.

Awesome, glad I could help.

Has the M Sport suspension from factory, so youll need to replace it with like for like. Suplex are highly regarded on here and infact I have them on my car too. Part number is 06248 for the 3.0 manual msport

Be careful undoing the pinch bolt that holds the shock into the hub, have a habit of shearing off if undone with a big bar, you can do it slowly with a ring spanner and a mallet to shock the bolt loose then tighten then repeat a little at a time to avoid shearing off. Buy new bolts from bmw.
You will find it very hard with normal Halfords spring compressors, you really need the floor standing hydraulic ones to make it easy and safe. I just replaced my front shocks and springs and wouldn’t want to do it any other way.

Apart from that it’s an easy job.

How do you remove the bolt on top of the strut as it spins around ?

I use an impact gun, if you don’t have one use a ring spanner and a Alan key in the top of the strut.
