Front plate

Just saw a photo of an E89 belonging to a newbie from the U.S, without a front number plate and it looks so much better. As an experiment i will remove mine tomorrow and being of mid life crisis age, outwardly respectable and driving a car that should portray me to the constabulary as a pillar of the community, expect to not be reprimanded for this oversight. If,as a result, i should prove undetectable to those pesky mobile speed cameras(caught twice in one day) it will be an added bonus.I shall put in a weekly update but if it should go horribly wrong would gladly welcome forum members to visit me at whichever of Her Majesty's hotels i am incarcerated in.

The inspiration

I didn't run a front plate on my Elise for two years and never got pulled over.

I've been running no front plate on the Z4 for 2 months and I've been pulled twice for it!! :headbang:

I think its just more obvious on the Z4? Anyway both times I got away without a fine or anything  I was just polite and as they approached the car just said "no front plate right?" They smile, say yes, I explain that the number plate was hanging off by the rivets and I'm in the process of buying sticky tabs from Halfrauds.... Here's my plate officer, I did have it in the dash but it keeps slippling off when I go around corners. Ok, well get it done as soon.

Take it off. Worse case scenario you'll get a £30 fine

Mmmm. I think you'll find the worse case scenario is that they don't issue a fixed penalty and take you to court where the fine can be £1000.

I think the best way to achieve this is to move to a country where its legal to have no front plate. then you have no risk of a fine etc.

Feck me, why not just drive around with a blatent disrespect for the speed limit....and when you get stopped make up some lame pussy of an excuse and when the officer walks up to the car say "speeding, right?".

Put the plate back on. I agree it might look better without it, but thats tough s**t.

Another way of cleaning up the front end is to get a 5 digit private plate (or less if you can afford) and have a legal shorter plate fitted

its a nobber idea.. you are asking to get pulled.
my mate lost the front plate off his Elise after hitting a phesant and got continually tugged until he replaced it.

+1. who gives a toss, life's too short. If the OP gets pulled, its a rap or a small fine. £1000 fine in court? Talk about glad half empty.....

Sure, ignoring repeated warning will get you more grief, but nothing ventured nothing gained.

I have just returned from my third 2200-mile round trip to France towing a heavyweight trailer with my wifes number plate on the back of it because I couldn't be bothered to change it. Was anyone interested? err no. But I will change it this time, honest!

And I always love it when someone who drives a 140mph+ sports car talks about observing speed limits, its such bullsh1t......why buy a car like that in the first place?

Georgia is one of the US states that does not require a front number plate. In Georgia, the one on the back is called a "Tag." People put all sorts of vanity plates on the front. A Confederate Army Battle flag was one of the more controversial ones. We had nothing on the Mazda and our Ausfuhrkennzeichen on the X3. The German plate looked better than a couple of screw holes.

North Wales police are running a tax and insurance Enforcement campaign. Today, I saw a 330d booted for an expired tax disc. They are using ANPR to find illegal drivers. No front plate would probably get you pulled over. http://www.north-wales.police.uk/news__appeals/latest_news/illegal_driver_campaign.aspx

I'm no fun. True. I'm a right boring old fat fart!

140mph+ sports car and complain about speed limit....any car nowadays can break the speed limit. Just cos they can, doesn't mean they have to and not everyone buys cars for speed (note, I have 20i, not 35i).

I have been done for speeding in the past, so I'm not holier than thou, and deep down I believe that on the correct road conditions, going faster than the limit isn't a problem (I dont, cos of risk of getting caught, but I dont see the danger in it). My issue is speeding in the wrong conditions, or losing my license from it, cos I need my car for work. My point was that if the OP is going to break the law with the licence plate, why not break other laws as well?

My point is, its illegal and why the need to break the rule? ok, some rules are there to be broken, but come on, this is just vanity. I know people spend money to make the car look good (indeed, I bought the car for its looks, so vanity) but surely in this country a front number plate is just accepted.

Anyway,it's off and looks lovely in a stealth mode sort of way.I shall,of course, observe all speed limits in future having been as naughty as to travel at 35mph in a 30 zone and 58 in a 50 and being caught has taught me a vital lesson. In future i shall be guilty of shameless vanity and nothing more.
