Front fog lights retro fit

Hi,

I bought a 2004 Z4 2.2L last month it has no front fog lights apart from looking crap It would be nice to have them when there's fog !

I am hoping the the loom is a standard one otherwise it'll be wired up with a toggle switch which I don't want.

I've bought the OEM fog lights from ebay and I am trying to get a new headlight switch with the front fog switch included, I believe that this new switch will need programing at a BMW dealer is this true or is there a way around it ...

could I just swap over the front part of the switch(with the switch) onto the original switch unit(module) ??

regards.

U must have a seriously poverty spec- thats the first I've heard if without them- is there blanking plates in the recesses?

Hi,

yes It must be the most basic Z4 ever , to tell you the truth I didn't even notice untill I got home with it and then I couldn't believe it, got some serious retro fitting to do !.

Yes there are horrible little black plastic blanks where the fogs should be :(

Im sorry if u thought i was being rude- u have a z and regardless of what options u have that is a very special thing! Was only trying to point out that mods are easy on our cars ( I have a similar car to u!) and upgrades through retro fits are cheap and easy. I have done the crusie control, ipod, mfsw, cupholders etc and allm have been easy and cheap! Welcome along and enjoy the Z! :driving:

When I was looking for mine, I saw a 2.0l without leather which I thought was unusual so there are some exceptions around. I've not heard of a Zed without front fogs though. I wonder if they were removed for some obscure reason? Seems a bit odd to then blank them off though. As it sounds like its an oddity, chances are that the loom is kitted up to take them though. Good Luck fella

From memory the LCM contains mileage information for the car too, so not as simple as it sounds I don't think - would need recoding rather than swapping.

they were an option but nearly every car has them- however as with most things ie mfsw, crusie control etc i imagine the wiring will be there!

Hi,
No It will not detract from my Z4 ownership, I can have the new ones in in a couple of hours and I guess I'll have to take it to a BMW dealer for the reprogramming of the LCM...hopefully it will not cost too much

Thanks everyone :)

Has your LCM got the front fog button then? If not it will be a waste of time getting it coded

Hi Chris,

I am getting a new switch(with both fog light switches ), the programming question was about the new one ...thanks !

imo front fogs are a waste of time!

I have seen so may cars which use them in dense fog with their headlights on... which defeats the purpose of them.

I personally would spend that money on a new M front bumper (which is fogless)

Mine doesn't have fog lights either (2.5) and i bought it new in 2005. I got nearly 20% off a car in stock, otherwise of course i would have specced them. I think in Europe the fog lights were only standard on the 3.0i

Yes, all to do with taxation. Euro based cars are always less specced then UK ones throughout the model range.

Aside the fog or no fog argument there are a few points I'd offer:

If you have no loom fitted then changing the LCM will be a waste of time as you'll never work out how to retrofit and tap into the canbus. You maybe able to see it through the inspection hatch and my guess is it will be zip tied up out of the way

You need to ensure the bumper has mouldings inside to fit the lights to. I'm sure it will

The LCM must be of a similar car (pre facelift, same headlights (hlogen/xenon, same rear lights, etc. else it will need recoding for those too and may not work at all.

The LCM is way more than alight switch and also stores such as the odometer mileage. If you fit a new or replacement one and then drive the car it will place a dot in the mileage to indicate a 'clocked' car. It is my understanding this can never be removed even by BMW. check this carefully.

Frankly with all this I'd just fit lights, run a wire via a relay and concealed toggle switch if you want them.
