Forthcoming Pistonheads M Guide

Hi All,

I've been contacted by Pistonheads to add a few words about the M for a forthcoming guide. I'm a relative newcomer but am happy to share the information I've learned so far from my ownership as well as what I hear from my club members that race with the S54 at CSCC races. PH buyers guides are usually good and well researched so hoping it may help others into future ownership. I have pointed PH in this direction for more information as well as suggesting they speak to Redish and Amspeed among others.

Cheers, Dave :)

Got a mail too

When you respond make sure you tell them to avoid flimper spec cars

Don't worry Steve, I will be informing them of the shocking satnav and how it adds nothing to the value of the vehicle

Don't forget to tell them how the sat nav spoils the lines of the dash and slows the car down with extra weight.

Trailing arm bushes go soft very quick, leading to wandering from back end under hard acceleration. Replace with new BMW, or poly or limiter set up....

Very fussy on tyres. Can feel awful on wrong tyres.

Swimming hood motor.

Bad running during warm up - jerky and nasty - when coolant temperature less than 50 deg c - update DME to latest version

Hesitation issue at low RPM - when come on throttle, nothing then huge jerk - ongoing, see thread I believe to be ICV.

Brake discs - expensive

Awful DSC nanny which cuts in far too early - code car to enable M track mode

Knock through steering when hitting brakes - front control arm bushes a la E46

Sat nav's which pack up, crash and generally muck about but can often be sent away to specialists for repair

Dodgy clutch feel, which does not respond to driver input - CDV delete

Engine mount issues - documented here

O2 sensor(s) packing up and are expensive

Expensive inspection 2 service with shim adjustment

Some cases of rocker arms wearing leading to misfires on higher mileage cars

etc, etc

Hope to help

:D

Your reply was much more technical than mine, I just said Nav was shite!

You have satnav? I thought 'flimper spec' was poverty spec? Changed your car? :D

+1

Don't forget to tell them the Zed was designed to be a Roadster, which is more fun to drive and has better traction of the line than the crashy riding coupe. :fuelfire:

Oh, some nasty USA sourced trim components - cheap and nasty plastics, rattles and squeeks from these.

Cup holders which snap with the smallest amount of heavy handedness.

Outside mirrors which the glass falls away from the heater element when you shut the door.

But these are issues common to all E85 Z4's I guess.

sniffer why all the negative stuff??

why not tell them why this car has so many loyal followers? tuneability, stiff chassis, gearbox feel, engine is just a masterpiece ( if fragile now days) the feeling as you sat over the rear wheels, the view over the hood , small changes to the chassis can bring out just how good the platform is..... the absolutely beautiful design, all I've seen is lots of downer talk.

i mean i get all the common points but the cheap and nasty trim?? its a decade old ffs. As owners put a positive spin on things, tell them why you love and connect with the car.

I was thinking the same myself Byron (on the negativity). Funny how people's minds work.

Well, in response to you and beedub, I simply posted in response to to the OP with knowledge I have which may I thought may be useful to potential purchasers in terms of a buying guide type document.

Your back slapping is not that useful to potential purchasers in my opinion as they can get all that from a quick Google which will produce reviews of the cars back in the day. The reviews will talk about the good points.

When people are looking to purchase such a car, they want information which may be useful in terms of what to expect and what to look out for so they are forewarned This information is by its very nature 'negative' if you inhabit the rose tinted rarefied atmosphere area which you guys seem to live in.

Get over it, you are not the Police and cannot control what I choose to write on a free forum such as this. I like the car, I own one FFS but if people want useful information about buying one, I will talk openly about it and share my knowledge on the subject.

If you want to write how much you love your car and what is good about, feel free, but don't kick me for trying to respond to the thread in a useful manner.

unsure as to why so many negatives?? If you don't like your car get rid. Also all the negatives will do, is put people off buying them. Very strange to jump up to shout about how crap your car is.

It is not crap and I have never said it was. Read what I wrote. I simply listed FACTUAL points based on my ownership experience and knowledge of these cars. Not subjective opinions, facts.

I own one and spend a lot of money on it, I enjoy it and know very well it's good points.

I read this thread to be a buying guide. It it is supposed to be a back slapping, circle jerking, discussion of the cars good points, my apologies as I misunderstood what the OP was looking for.

If it is to be about the good points then as beedub said, the engine, the gearbox and ac cobra heavy type feel to everything. Reminds me of an old school car like a TVR.

The long bonnet and muscular proportions, the rarity and kudos associated with owning one. The last ever incarnation of the BMW straight 6 naturally aspirated M engine line.

All has been discussed many times here before, blah, etc, blah

Hold on sunshine. Who got out of bed the wrong side today?

A buying guide should be positive and negative. Yours were all negative which three people have now commented on. Something you obviously reflected on because you've listed a few of the positive things above. There's no need to be offensive, just because a couple of us thought your initial response was a bit glass half-empty!

Sunshine?

I just listed some points to try and help the OP. As I have said, I thought the OP was looking for constructive information on incorporate into a buying guide. I am not going into it again, but I had best intentions when I posted.

Was my first post here for a while and this will now be my last.

Thanks and well done.
