Formula one..? Not any more.

Ok so maybe a tad OTT title but having been to the GP today it's a bit 'oh dear' that the GP2 cars, whilst not as quick, but not by much, are considerably louder and much more raw, and the racing was closer. The F1 cars are visibly smoother in handling and yes quick, but the noise is frankly pathetic, the race was good but only because the Mercs fluffed the start and then it rained.

It's right what is being said, F1 needs a re-think, and a big one at that.

I actually thought today was one of the best races I'd seen in a long time. Don't have a problem with it personally.

ditto, great race today

I couldn't stand the red bull years, vettel's domination was relentless with an inferior team mate.

being a LH fan the past two seasons have been more than favourable, with the Rosberg battle last year and Ferrari and Williams mixing up the LH | NR this season

Watched it on the box and thought it was a decent race with some good bouts of wheel to wheel racing which in all honesty you probably miss alot of it if actually there. Agree the cars sound a little pants these days but thats progress for you, so long as the drivers keep their competative edge and the cars don't sound like Formula E then I'm happy. There was a good piece before the race with Hamilton and Sterling Moss in cars of Mosses day and they sounded absolutely awsome so maybe some of todays progress isn't progress afterall.

Tim.

Yes but is'nt that the problem Inkeys, quote,'in a long time' , it takes a out of the norm situation and rain to spice it up, and seriously the GP2 cars we're louder by some margin.

And are we not in a another era where the Mercs will dominate for another couple of years until 2017. Williams we're good today especially but the Ferrari's needed the rain.

But fair points chaps, I respect your views.

Took my 6yr old son to watch a few F1 Ferraris from early 2000's at the start of the year at silverstone and he found that just one going round was deafning.
Today we took ear plugs and ear defenders and they stayed in my bag all day ! He was most dissapointed. Good wood was louder last weekend.

The GP2 and 3 were definitely louder. Hopefully next year they'll sort it as everyone's moaned.
My 3.0 sounds better ! Well it is bigger !

It was great getting on the track at the end and saw a few Z4's in the Towcester car park.

F1 cars quietest of the day. Even the 911s sounded better. Used to be I could hardly hear the commentary through headphones. Now you can hear the commentary over the circuit PA. The noise needs to come back. GP2s good to watch. Was discussing with my son if F1 needs a Saturday sprint race like GP2. 1 set of hard tyres and flat out for half distance, no tyre or fuel management, then maybe reverse grid for Sunday feature race. Hopefully get some different faces on the podium. Today's race was one of the best recently though. Lewis just pitting as the rain came down at club corner. Perfect timing.

To be honest I've lost interest, as others have stated it took the rain to spice it up. And so far the season it has just been a procession

But to be honest we all miss the following http://youtu.be/5SoZiTxdQyw 20seconds in  :D

Beautiful. When cars were heard but not seen. :D

The sport seems to have lost what racing is about, it's all rules and h&s.

The superbike racing at knockhill today and the GP2 was better to watch. Closer racing with a bit of "get out of the way" contact :driving: .

F1 is to clinical now..

Didn't watch it live. The Cycling is more exciting live. :o

Watched the highlights,ok race. The rain seemed to screw up the Williams which was a shame, would be good to see them beating Ferrari. They do sound like wet farts though.

I sit on the other side of the fence and don't mind the cars being quieter. I don't really get 'cars have to be loud'. I would much rather have fast cars. If they are loud because that makes them faster, bring it on. I do realise I am in the minority with this. I had a flat six in my trike with straight through pipes, now that was loud, so not adverse to it.

I enjoyed this weekends race. It was a shame that Williams seem to loose out from a great start, but my F1 hero won, so thats cool!

Fair point John. The race was a perfect storm of Williams surprising all, rain, Bottas driving like me and we'll times tyre choices. Part of the charm Silverstone mid summer provides I guess. Maybe we need adjustable weather in races instead.

I enjoyed the race, but agree some of the races haven't been great.

For me, the reliability of some cars has not been good enough to be honest. Most of the cars should be finished, but they just are not. Honda/McLaren should be ashamed of themselves really.

I went last year to Spa to watch the F1 with my girlfriend, and we enjoyed it. Going this year again with the boys, but its more about the weekend experience that's great, rather than the F1 race as such! I expect this year might be the last F1 race for a while unless they sort the noise out, and make it more excititng, but I will still watch on TV.

I expect I will be heading back to Le Mans.

but F1 is also, more so? about car manufactures showing their capabilities. In todays climate that means fuel efficiency, aerodynamics and all things electronic. the same goes for todays cars, just compare the Z4M with M's being produced today

I think if we want pure racing then the lower leagues is where its at

This. But it won't happen as it's old technology and F1 introduces new technology for road cars, plus their not 'green' enough. But they could still keep the new turbo engines and energy recovery, easily make them louder, but adjust the levels of downforce so the cars can follow more closely and loose the rest as above.

Years ago I went to testing and you could hear the cars screaming round from the road leading to the circuit entrance, it gave you goosebumps. During a touring car race in the 90's Murray walker said on commentary, 'and that stunning sound is an F1 car testing on the south circuit', you could easily hear it on video over the tourers, and that was the RS 500's and M'3s. Yesterday you didn't know the cars we're rounding a corner until you saw them first or you saw the screens and the filming helicopter swooping by before the cars got there.

Obviously you can't go stamping your feet demanding this and that BUT for the ticket price in general and a grandstand seat I had then yes, I expect a bit more for the cost tbh. It's the same reason you can complain if a cars crap, any car is a luxury and better than walking a long way but for the cost of them it's right to expect something decent imo. I won't go again until the show's improved.

As for the McLaren's, it's bad for F1 that drivers as good as Button and Alonso are dragging such a donkey around, Alonso didn't have to move but I'm sure he didn't know how bad they would be, frankly it was embarrassing watching him constantly move out of the way to let others through going into Vale, the fans are being robbed of them fighting at the front and another team to take it to the Mercs.

Nice that Button, Hamilton and Stevens got off the truck at Vale to see the crowd and chuck some caps.

I'm inclined to agree with john-e89 to some extent.

Whilst i do agree, yesterday's race was one of the better ones recently - it was mainly because of the edge-of-your-seat "will they wont they get the right [clutch/stop/tyrechange] strategy", nothing to do with the performance of the driver really, or the car on the day. The merc's are consistently faster (or should i say, the honda is just consistently terrible), making it a largely pointless year's racing as they'll always win, the only driver who really does anything is Lewis, and that's because he likes to go aggressive in front of the home crowd (and fucked it up and lost a place). He only won due to the lucky pitstop strategy really.

Too many regulations, and having team orders and restrictions on car design etc... it should just be open house turn up and race. Hearing some of the older F1 cars at Goodwood FoS recently ... christ.. it's nowhere near as good as it used to be. Even the FXX K sounded awesome.

Would be cool to see a paradigm change in the car shape/design too.

And yes - it was embarrassing that two drivers with three world championships between them were at the back of the grid, went off early and/or spent the entire race getting lapped. Would be nice if McLaren just flipped to the Merc engine.

Be nice to see the best drivers winning, instead of just the best car...

The development waves are usually around 3 years...You get domination of the car thats currently at the crest of its development wave and whoever is sat in it will win..
