Very sobering m8 & slightly regretful that you admitted your speed.

I was always advised to say you were overtaking & paying 100% attention to the road, not the speedo. Reasoning for this (as advised by my retired Traffic officer in law) was that the Highway Code states when overtaking to do it as quickly as possible - it does not stipulate it has to be done within the speed limit. Not a foolproof argument, but a technicality to say the least

If you have to break the speed limit to overtake, then you shouldn't be overtaking.

If I had to stick to the speed limit everywhere I would more than likely crash through either boredom or me not paying attention! the slower I go the less I seem to concentrate.

I have managed 23 years with a clean licence... so far from a lunatic...i dont think there is any chance I would pass now though...to many bad habits!

It is true though the slower I go the worse I get!

I end up looking at the scenery when cruising within the limit.

It adds interest.

clean license since the early 90s

^^^ a classic example of where theory and reality are very different. That's why academics rarely make successful business people.

Whilst I do have a degree and no business acumen at all, I don't agree with your disagreement!

Its simple...the speed limit is the speed LIMIT. If you have to break it in order to pass the vehicle in front, then either the vehicle in front is quite close to it already, or you are trying to overtake when there isn't really time - so you have to go faster to avoid a collision.

This is actually fact of law...the speed limit!

I never once said I agreed with it, or that I always stick to it (I do a lot more nowadays though).

But its simple...if the car in front is near to the speed limit, then you should have no need to pass them (legally that is).

Speed limits are indeed the limits .... and are there to be adhered to, and if you drive faster than the speed limit and get caught you will be prosecuted ......

which is all well and good but completley ignores the simple fact that now and then being a human heing, the desire to feel the "rush" of a bit of speed far out weighs common sense .... and the brain sends a command to the right foot to press harder before you are able to countermand this ........ :D
Not sure is this is the defence I will use

I was thinking that I could maybe say that I am an intensely lonely person with no friends and was having a really lonely day when I spotted a police car parked up and saw an opportunity to talk to someone .......

or ...... that I was taking part in cross country race and that I was deployed as a decoy to keep the polis occupied whilst the "racers" zipped through .......

I think I would definitely fail, well the theory test anyways

At anything over 30mph its the unpredictability of others that worries me, especially push bikes :)

Maybe it shows your lack of understanding of how to drive around cyclists?
There are some utter numpties out there on bikes but there are far more car drivers who don't know how to behave around cyclists (close passes, aggressive passes to get to a red traffic light at which the cyclist sails past in any case)

Think of a bike as another vehicle, but one which is VERY sensitive to potholes etc. Cyclists shouldn't ride at the very left of the road as it is very dangerous to be there and expect cyclists to have to avoid potholes. I have been driving 27 years and cycling for 40.

Excellent, this discussion just took an unexpected bit welcome turn. I was getting bored of the holier-than-thou comments anyway. Let's talk about cyclists and red lights - they don't apply if you're on a bike, right ?

I don't jump red lights.
Those people I know who do, say it is because of a perceived need to be able to get away from the traffic behind them sooner.
I do see some cyclists who are utter dicks jumping on and off kerbs, jumping lights etc. Anyone who cycles like that deserves criticism, but to say that all cyclists do is just like saying that every male Z4 driver is driving with his penis in his hand. Wrong and insulting.

Advanced stop boxes for cyclists no longer work because vehicle drivers do not respect them.
The solution would be advanced red lights for cyclists in my opinion. Remember for every cyclist on the road, there is one less car in the queue ahead of you. I would far rather not use my coupe for short journeys

My philosophy is simple......ban them off the roads and onto designated cycle paths!

Safer cyclists, Happy motorists :driving:

Do I see an old being thread being resurrected :D

I'm with Tim. Driving or cycling past Clapham Common before 7am on a weekday is positively hazardous for everyone. I'm amazed I don't see bodies lying in the gutter every day. Investing in a decent network of cycle paths and preventing cyclist and drivers from meeting is the only solution.

I probably come across a little anti cyclist  but seriously I'm not, I have a mountain bike but I won't cycle on the roads, simples, I value my life and cycling along any busyish road is not a pleasurable experience. I have a few friends who are members of a cycle road club and it makes me chuckle when they get so angry towards drivers etc but when I ask why and they reply, well I cycle defensively i.e. in the middle of road rather than near to the kerb because they get fed up of drivers pushing then into the kerb, but all it does is piss motorists off and they wonder why. What cyclists I feel fail to understand is their vulnerability and to many motorists are basically a slow moving obstruction.

I didn't say all cyclists jump red lights - however driving into and out of London almost every day I can tell you that 75% of the cyclists I see at red lights ride right through them. I've almost killed a couple when I've been pulling out of the green lights at a junction as they cruise on through.... Which is a little counterproductive if they are doing it to get ahead of the traffic. Oh and I know drivers aren't any better - the number of vehicles I see barreling through junctions just as (or worse just after) the light changes to red has increased significantly in recent years. If the junction is on an immediate change to amber on the other lights it's massively dangerous. There's no excuse for it, a red light is a red light, end of.

I always respect cycle lanes, take care around large vehicle and buses, and always stay out of the cycle box. I don't always drive with my penis in my hand, but I'm not insulted you mentioned it - just a little embarrassed :D

Holier-than-thou comments about speeding....

I was just telling it how it is. I've been done for speeding, so I am not holier-than-thou!

I'm probably fatter and uglier than-thou though!

kevinmarkwhite, I don't know, I am pretty fat and ugly

I was just :fuelfire:

Naughty of me...
