For Sale: Steering Wheel with MFSW

It's 61 12 0 394 848

At first they said it wasn't available as a separate part, but when politely prompted to have a look at the computer there it was.

Thanks.

I spent last night in the electrical diagrams. I now understand how everything works and where the harnesses are...

The steering wheel functions talk on the 'K' bus....serial data...

This is cool. I do this s**t for a living....except on Submarines... "How does it work? Don't know, Lets go find out"

Shipkiller,

Hi,

Did you go ahead and buy this MFSW?

I'm looking at something similar to get my '03 ready fro OEM bluetooth

I have not but I am still thinking about it. It CAN be done. Once I find the proper pins to put on the TWO extra wires I will need, then it's a done deal.

Shipkiller , that MFSW would fit your car.
I retrofitted one to my Brothers Z4 today (build date 06/03) and that required the extra two wires. On the picture you took of your steering wheel multiplugs it is the one on the far right that links the MFSW to the car. Fitting the extra loom (that only costs £4.80) was easy;

1. Diconnect battery, wait 20 mins.
2. Remove airbag unit and old steering wheel.
3. Remove dashpod ( only one connector and 1 torx screw!).
4. Remove lower cowling (1 screw).
5. Remove light switch unit (gently prise off aluminium trim and then 2 screws and one connector).
6. Run loom from light switch connector to green connector under steering column.
7. Replace light switch unit, dash pod, lower cowling and steering wheel/airbag.
8. Reconnect battery.
9. Have coffee and decide how to spend the £200 BMW charge (and you have saved) to do this enjoyable little mod that only takes 30 minutes.
You didn't happen to use these instructions did you?

I feel like the dudes from Zoolander when they're trying to obtain files from the computer...

Yes, those are the instructions I used. The harness is supplied with the female terminals connected already. These just slide into the appropriate slots in the green connector under the steering column. At the other end of the loom the two wires are connected with minature ScotchLock type connectors (also supplied).
It's one of those jobs that appears long winded when you look at the installation instructions, but take the bits apart and everything becomes clear. :)

The Forum's "how-to" section has a thread with the retrofit instructions, which show where the two extra pins go....

I'm actually doing this right now to mine, but with the addition of the paddles for my steptronic... which requires a new volute spring/collar spring or whatever it's called.

ledojoh - I'm about to embark on the same, just awaiting delievery of the wheel (paddle shift and MF) I'm not sure until I receive it if I do need a new clock spring. Sure mine is missing the 2 pins in the left hand socket, but there may be unused ones in the other 2 sockets. Also in checking the part number that most people seem to specify needing it actially refers to the same part as already fitted. Perhaps there is a way of specifying th eSMG version??

Wires themselves are easy and picking up 2 wires by the selector is all that is needed for the steptronic. MF that is a 2' harness to make up and 2 pins at each end, unless I can find a BMW part number for just the harness as opposed to a full retrofit kit

Anyway let me know how you get on and any part numbers/ things you discover

Well for me I purchased the whole steering wheel which has the MF buttons and the paddle shifters. In addition to that I ordered 2x connectors (serial: 61-13-0-005-197) which were connected from the lightswitch to the green connector under the steering wheel. The hardest part of the installation was removing light switch trim.

For me it was more like:
5. Remove light switch unit (apply extreme pressure prying off the aluminum trim. Extreme frustration must be achieved before attempting.) :headbang:

Other then that it was a peace of cake. Also, when removing the trim, keep in mind that it's actually 2 pieces stuck together. Make sure to pry it off from the bottom and not between the 2 pieces. I couldn't figure out how to get the paddle shifters to work though. What's this about needing more parts? Anyone have the part numbers?

Traxxer - thanks for the part number for the connectors - useful

I too am working from a complete wheel with paddles and MF, so in essence the same job.

Interesting that you removed the light switch. Reading the factory MF retrofit instruction they simply remove the instrument binnacle and to the righ you can access the wiring plugs of the module. Am I missing something?

Paddle shifters is supposedly very easy. Use a cd rom type connector on the extra 2 pin socket on the rear of the steering switch unit and run a twin lead from there them to the 2 central wires on the steptronic shifter (located on the RHS of it). Caveat to this is that it is theory. I have researched it well, but yet to fit the parts....

Let me know how things go, I'd hate to have to disassemble things again unless I'm sure I have the needed parts and know-how to do the job.

The reason I removed the light switch was so that I could disconnect the cables in the back but thinking about it now maybe that could all be done from the instrument binnacle assuming you know how to disconnect the cables. I tried doing that first but I couldn't get the damn thing out. After removing the light switch I saw that it had a little lever you had to pull down for the cables to slide out.

Sure - just waiting for the wheel itself - somewhere in the US/UK postal system and a harness to arrive from BMW Germany - due in next Tuesday

If I may ask, how much did you pay for the wheel?

$180 - the price asked by the seller on this board

I paid the same from mine from a seller on a different forum. Have you had a chance on installing the new steering wheel yet? Interested to see what the process was to get the paddle shifters to work.

Not yet - surprisingly although not really the sellers fault the steering wheel is still stuck somewhere in the postal system. I have however done the initial wiring from the steptronic the the column. Quite interesting actually because simply by grounding either wir you can upshift or downshift.

I needed a retrofit lead for the MF piece and that cam in from Germany so that's a simple plug of pins into connectors between the new steering ring and the LCM so should only be a 30 minute job when I get the wheel.

I will post when done

What's the part number for the lead?

61.12.0.394.848 - cable set - £4.94 plus tax. Special order from Germany (5 working days)

I also ordered new mount (steering switch) 61.31.8.379.091 £64.98 plus tas. This has the extra 2 pins for the paddle shift.

Hope this helps, but appreciate I cannot guide further until I have completed the job
