For owners with the sat nav option

In other words - they don't want to do it.

Their first answer is also "it can not be done".

And finally, they state that the system needs to be coded for it to work. Again, rubbish.

I'm sure most folks here could do it, if they wanted to. But I prefer to do other things with my off time then spend several hours cutting holes in my dash and installing sat nav's when I can just go out, buy one and use the suckers on my windshield :idunno: - different strokes. My Z isn't my daily driver, it's just a toy so going through all that trouble isn't worth it to me. I'd rather be driving it or detailing it. It stays locked in my garage and I don't carry passengers so the wires are no bother to me at all and possible theft is significantly decreased. I think the installed ones look fantastic, but the alternative is just fine for me :)

You carried me! Am I not a passenger :(

I did a "cj10jeeper" on it :)

Total cost was £430-ish, of which £300 was the dvd computer. The cable loom from BMW was surprisingly only £50, the new radio was $10 (yes, 10 dollars from ebay ...) and the screen was £70.

The whole job of cabling and dismantling the car was about 2 hours, the cutting of the hole in the dash was 4 hours as there was only a tolerance of 1 mm around the screen.

FInal result :

How is the screen held in place?

When you remove the airvent, there are two plastic brackets with holes in them. The screen has two plastic brackets as well. They fit over eachother and that is what fits at the front.

At the rear, there is a plastic strip that hides 3 screws which screws the back of the monitor in place.

Since FnI mentioned no passengers I've posted my exception to the rule in the lounge

Slightly NSFW image, so you have to find it yourself'...

Obviously not. You are just a "thing" with 2 marbles :D
Excuse me: enfield is a very smart man...he has FOUR marbles - twice that of the average man! (btw, I know which marbles you're referring to...bad man :telloff: )

Darling, I toted you about a mile...two if you count that small, insignificant wrong turn  . Which of course, I only took because that's where you said your friends went...which takes me off the hook, basically :D

^^^ I never said my friends went anywhere except the steak place.... :P

You did the wrong turn on purpose and may I point out that you did not come to a complete stop at the STOP sign before you took that left.... and then there was the improper U-Turn :D :D :D and then you almost kerbed the car  - how could you do that to the car! The HUMANITIES!!

Is there an online guide for doing this job?

Also, I've looked on ebay, and found the GPS computer but no screen, where did you get yours for £70?

Thanks.

I have the full pdf for the retrofit, I can mail that to you unless Sp3ctre can host it somehow.

My screen came from Germany.

Here is one: http://ngvi.ebay.co.uk/vi?ngvi&backtoid=3&ppsp=1&li=0&pdp=0&sspagename=WDVW&dsr=1&item=270217031991&backto=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.co.uk%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Fsofocus%3Dunknown%26sbrftog%3D1%26dfsp%3D2%26from%3DR10%26_trksid%3Dm37%26satitle%3Dz4%2Bmonitor%26sacat%3D-1%2526catref%253DC6%26floc%3D1%26sargn%3D-1%2526saslc%253D3%26sadis%3D200%26fpos%3DRH10%2B4SZ%26sabfmts%3D1%26ga10244%3D10425%26ftrt%3D1%26ftrv%3D1%26saprclo%3D%26saprchi%3D%26fsop%3D2%26fsoo%3D2&pass=tGmFymn723YEE1xTdopwX8TJE9k%3D

Ok thanks. I'd like to see what goes into doing this job.

I'll PM you my email address

I take it you have seen a car you like without it??

For me personally i find it really usefull, not only is it sat nave, it also displays computer trips, miles etc, when I get my ipod fitted it will show tracks etc, mine also has TV (now that is a waste of time!!) but was already fitted.

If you dont need it, but once a year, you will easily do without it,, and just use a portable one maybe.

Yes, this one http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/302967.htm Seems to be quite high spec apart from no Sat Nav

I like the idea of the Sat Nav showing up the ipod info, as that's all I use now when out in a car.

What to do, what to do???

No fit, what to do, :headbang: nice car no doubt about that  ,,, but its your money,

did you notice it doesnt have sta nav tho

Document sent

It really is not that hard to do, and is not very expensive either. Makes the car a lot easier to sell as well. I sold my Z4 3.0 in 6 hours after advertising on Pistonheads and had a total of 20 replies about it.

Toys sell ...

Cheers, just been through the photo guide.

It all looks so simple up until the dash cutting bit, That's where balls of steel come in me thinks

I can well believe it helps sell a car.... I'd be on my way now to look at this one if it had it.

As you sit on the handbrake whilst cutting the hole, balls of steel do come in handy ... :D

As long as you make the hole to small to start with, and then extend it slowly and do lots of test fitting it is ok. I have done two of these now and both went without issues.

If at the same time you do the satnav you also fit the Intravee kit, you will also have the benefit of the best iPod adapter which fully integrates on the monitor with playlists / albums / search etc .

pvr" ....and the satnav was so much nicer then a TomTom. Much bigger said:
Are you serious??? :o The BMW nav is better than the TomTom? Not in a million years...sure I LOVE the integration into the car but it is such an archaeic system it is scary for a system that costs over 10x what a TomTom does. Rudimentary map graphics almost on par with Commodore 64, poor POI implementation (horrid search function, poorly categorised, can't select more than one, no audible alerts, no speed cameras unless you hack it) and many other functions that the current portable Navs have (advanced lane visualisation, 3d maps etc) that we can only dream of in ours.

Don't get me wrong, I like having it integrated in the car, but for what you pay we sure get a pretty substandard navigation device.

The reality is the car manufacturers will never be able to keep up with the rapidly evolving portable devices. By the time the 5-8 year development cycle of the car is completed the technology they picked is already obsolete.

What they should do is partner with eg TomTom and integrate a highend device in the BMW. The ongoing upgradability will be by simply uploading the new firmware as TomTom releases it for all their devices.

^^^ The problem with portable is that it usually sits in the car - usually in my Infiniti's glovebox.

Can't really leave it in plain view due to B&E potential.... Portable may be better - but it is not used. That is why portable is worse.

drzed, If you read what I wrote, I did say it was not the most advanced system.

I have the TomTom as well as the BMW system, as I use the TomTom for the Z meetings routes. Hence I am in a position to compare, the BMW system IS quicker on the calculation, it is 4 times the screen size and is far, far clearer in picture. It has all the POIs that I need, it dials the phone numbers of the restaurants / hotels when I look for it. The BMW system also has the 3D view from firmware 28 onwards.

When driving in tunnels, the BMW system continues to work using the motion of the car so junctions within tunnels work. On junctions, the direction you need to take is much clearer then with the TomToms which can be ambigious - and the arrows on those sometimes covers multiple (possible) roads.

Obviously, the BMW system is bad value for money for the level of advance compared to all-in-one systems such as the TomTom
