Flooring for kitchen/dining room

We have just knocked through from the kitchen to the dining room and want to make a single space, but I can't decide what sort of flooring to put in. We have 2 dogs so need something that is hard wearing and preferably something that could cope with getting wet.

We were originally looking at engineered wood but I have my worries about that in a kitchen environment. Tiles are an option but I guess they are a bit cold unless you go the underfloor heating option (bit expensive).

I have seen some good reviews of the Karndean and Amtico ranges of flooring but have yet to see any up close.

I'm wondering what others with kitchen dining areas have chosen, and how they have held up over time? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi, I lay lots of wooden flooring as part of my job, I would say engineered flooring wouldn't be that good in a kitchen environment not designed to get wet, I have laid quite a lot of the Aqua lock type laminate with the green rectangular underlay sheets (approx 8mm thick) this quite a the flooring down a lot and is warm under the bare feet, and being Aqua lock will be very hard wearing and water proof/easy to clean, they come in a lot of styles and colours

LVT ( luxury Vinyl Tile ) Karndean or Amtico will perform very well.
Don't just get it as cheap as poss off the internet then some cowboy to fit it.
Go to an approved dealer, it's all about sub floor preparation And quality of installation.
You will then have a floor that will look good for many years.

I'm in the same position, having whole new kitchen, new walls and ceiling.
Having someone local who fits Karndean come and give me a quote this week. looks to be hardwearing and not cold to the touch which we want as our kitchen is quite big.
Doesn't sound cheap though so I might be in for a shock on price.

I recently ripped up an Amtico floor from my kitchen when it was completely redone. There are some great designs, mine had about 12 different tile types to make it appear gold inlaid. From what i gather its expensive and really does require a real pro fitment. The previous owner of my house was an Amtico rep, so it was a good advert

I had polished tiles done for a modern look, but it'd be no good for kids or dogs. Tiler reckoned the Amtico would have been 10k

I have Karndean in my kitchen, lounge and hall.
Brilliant stuff and will easily cope with your needs. It looks so real too.
+1 We put Karndean in our bathroom and it looks lovely

Thanks guys, lots of good info there!! Just off out to go and have a look at some Karndean.

On a positive note, I was made redundant and have sorted a new job straight away, so guess where the redundancy money is going, LOL.

Our son has a crazy dog so unsure how it would hold up to dog claws scratching it when he visits.

We' ve had Amtico in the past and its been brilliant - plan to install it in the current house at some point.

I've got karndean in my hall and kitchen, its been down for about 5 years and still look's great. There is a bit of maintenance care to do but all in all very pleased. Just to add we too have 2 dogs and have had no problems .
As has been said get the dearest you can afford and you will not regret it!.

We have oak floorboards from a local mill - lovely, and even if they become scratched it all adds to the appearance. Have them throughout the downstairs - started fitting them about 10 years ago, and completed about 6 years ago - apart from the kitchen, which is tiled. We didn't bother with underfloor heating, the tiles are fully insulated below (not on a concrete floor) and don't get that cold - we have 2 dogs and they have no issues with either flooring.

I would like the hall tiled and have heard of Karndean as it is mentioned by the estate agents up here when a house has it!

I have done the self same thing. Now got a "family room" which consists of an L shape formed by the kitchen and living room. I don't see a need to match the flooring in both......so we are going eclectic. We have floor tiles in the kitchen with under floor heating (cheaper than I thought it would be) We are going to go with the Engineered Wood for the lounge (once our bi-fold doors are fitted and the room redecorated) The floors will be separated by a distinct border.

Another vote for Karndean here - great stuff - put it down in our Kitchen / both bathrooms / hall 10 years ago - still looks pretty much as new .

Definitely don't scrimp on the installation though - it's all about the sub floor (apparently).
