Fitting M Steering Wheel

Dave- go for the wheel!

I wasnt actually going to admit this to anyone, but im sat on the sofa watching TV with the steering wheel beside me. About every 15 minutes ive been picking it up and pretending to drive the car with it...........feels so nice.

Okay, this is the centre of the wheel. You will notice one of the threads is missing...

SteeringWheelSpigot.jpg

The should be the same missing from the spigot. As CJ said, to be safe I'd set the steering straight before you start, it may be difficult with the power off.

:!: Am sure you know this, but for anyone else looking in, if you need to straighten the wheel make sure the air bag is reconnected before connecting the battery. When you're done follow the disconnect process from scratch.

If you need any convincing this may help, comparison of the wheels side by side:

The old wheel looks so weedy! It may just be me, it may be a placebo, but I was amazed how much better the steering feel is.

Couldn't tell you what the buttons mean - I have the pleb edition!

I have been thinking about this as well as I have always liked the 'chunkier' M steering wheel. Sideshow you going to go that extra length and change the gear stick as well? Am I right in thinking this is illuminated?

sideshowbob,

PawnSacrifice, Thank you so much for taking the time to get that together. Love the tri-colour stitching - will have to find out how much extra that is.

aRtemis, If you mean the ZHP one - I don't think so. See:

Ah ye thats the one I have seen, for some reason I thought it was standard.

Re - Tri Colour Stitching: every example I have seen as the 'M' colours

I could be wrong, and stand to be corrected, but I think tri-colour stitching is M wheels for M cars... black stitching is the M sport wheel for standard cars.

I do like the stitching but feel like a bit of an imposter

DaveG - no worries! Just following the standard set by others

ZHP gearknob fitted 4 hours ago :D

Came downstairs this morning and what did i find? A perfectly packaged retrofit cable sent very generously by pawnsacrifice! (I must say Matt, you have very neat handwriting! :D )
I will hopefully be able to get this fitted whilst taking notes and photos at the same time. I will let you all know how i get on and post the results.
Also wanted to say a public thank you to pawnsacrifice. Its people like him that make this forum great.

no, the MFSW were prewired on earlier models whether they were fitted or not. Do a search if you need the date :)

edit: wait, I was thinking of Cruise Control, and the date was Oct 04 :D

You were half right anyway!

The cable is only needed on cars manufactured before September 2003.

I spent this morning (now yesterday morning) fitting the steering wheel, and the rest of the day trying to write a How to. Ive never done this before so all feedback is gratefully received.
The new wheel is brilliant. So far the best mod ive done.
You should be able to find the writeup here;-

I've bought the wheel now thanks to everyone's input. Got a great deal at £195 delivered from Joe at Soper of Lincoln :D

For anyone in the US doing the DIY, I had a heck of a time finding the "retrocable" 61120394848 needed, but actually called BMW and the part wasn't mastered in the system for the US stealers to order,......but now it is :D So now any dealer in the US should be able to find it in their system and order for you. GetBMWparts.com has it the cheapest at $21 plus shipping. I feel like I have paved a small but yet important road here....

I actually ended up ordering my retro cable from Joe at Sopers BMW and am awaiting a quote on the M wheel itself. Hopefully should have it and install it within the next couple weeks :)
