Fitting M Steering Wheel

Hi Guys,
Just received my M steering wheel with multifunction controls today. and i have a few questions before fitting it.
Ive done abit of searching around on here and it looks pretty simple to remove my old one;-

1/ Disconnect negative lead from battery for about 20 minutes,
2/ insert a screwdrive into the holes either side of the rear cover to pop the airbag clips
3/ disconnect airbag,
4/ Undo 16mm bolt holding on steering wheel and remove
5/ Fit new one as a reversal of removal.

I also read something on here about needing an extra cable when fitting a MFSW to a car manufactured before 9/03. My car was manufactured 4/03. Is this correct? Do i need an extra cable before i can fit the wheel?
Also im assuming the airbag from my current wheel will fit the new wheel?
Also there are 3 electrical plugs on the new wheel. Ive taken a photo of these and numbered them 1-3. I would be really grateful if someone could tell me what each of the plugs are for. And if i do need an additional cable how it fits into the above?

Nice... you'll love it, feels so much better!

1 - MF cable
2 and 3 - connect to the rear of the air bag.

It will make more sense when you have the old wheel off.

Have the spare cables that you may need for the retrofit, if you need it drop me a PM. I'll sort you out the instructions too, well, send you the PDF.
EDIT: Here's a link... MFSW Retrofit PDF
Hopefully give you a better idea of what you need for your car.

One pointer, the airbag clip is the safety pin looking things down either side - took me ages to figure that out!

Thank you so much for that PawnSacrifice. Unfortunately after trying to get my head around page 10 of that instruction manual i think im going to have to ask someone else to fit it. It all went straight over my head!
One thing im sure of tho is that im going to need that extra cable.................PM on its way. :D

i have decided i want exactly this, and will order it just before going on holibobs this friday.

can you give me the part numbers you ordered, and the price you paid?

cheers in advance :D:P

You may want to think about adding a M Z4 wheel (32307906780) with the multifunction controls. I bought this for less than $400 brand new, and it's a great upgrade over the original wheel. It also came with the black spokes, which I think look better anyways.

my current wheel is in very good nick, and I've just spoken to Sytner, who quoted that wheel at £220.21, which is about four times more than I want to pay :)

but it does look nice!

There you go matey. All the info you need, and all from your own post!!! :D

haha.. i knew I'd mentioned it, but could I find it? lol.

Sideshow bob - I have a multi func wheel i've not got round to fitting yet, same as you i need the extra wire to fit it.
If you do fit it yourself please take a couple of pics to show where this extra wire goes to and from. Like you i found this part of the guide a little confusing! :)

I will try and persuade a friend (ex bmw mechanic), to fit it for me when he gets a chance. Ill take some photos and we will try and get a How to going. Ill do my best but please dont hold your breath, him trying to find time to do it will be an accomplishment in itself- let alone with me buzzing round taking photos and asking annoying questions!! :D

The extra bit of loom needed is p/n 61 13 0 005 197 and costs about £4.50.

Thanks for this Nick

Hey Nick. Just ordered that part and was given a price of 99p!!!!! Just checked it on real OEM and its showing up as trunk lid bushing contact :?

Check, double check and triple check that your original steering wheel is DEAD straight before removing it.

Sorry about that. I'm confident this is correct -

Cable Set - 61 12 0 394 848 £4.94 + VAT.

You can't have too many spare trunk lid bushing contacts.

How come it says no parts found on real oem for that cable part. Am i doing it wrong or being stupid???

Its because its a part within a retrofit kit, so you need the bmw sub parts system to view it.........does that sound convincing? :D

So temped to do this mod now. It's either this or Intravee. I figured I bought the car to drive not listen to tunes in so the wheel would be the best choice!

How do you check the wheel is DEAD straight? Just by ensuring tyres are so?

Anyone know if it is possible to order the wheel with silver spoke trims? Think it matches the silver/metal interior trim.

I was amazed at how much better it feels!

Mine had a little mark on the bottom of the spigot and also the inside of the wheel, lined those up and bingo! Straight. I'll grab the old one from the garage now and double check that.

If you can't see the alignment markings then set the wheel dead centre straight ahead before you remove the old one (check it's still square after you've undone the retaining nut and loom. Put new on in the same position.

Nice one Pawn,

I was considering wheel controls retrofit but a multi-function M wheel for £230 delivered seems a bargain if I can fit it myself.

I presume the speaking icon button is for bluetooth, what's the R/T one?
