Fitting a double DIN aftermarket radio

While I admire your handywork I don't think the Zed is suited to this type of mod but it's just my opinion.
Hope you get much enjoyment out of it when completed and well done.

I agree with Jimbo, great mod but it just doesn't look "natural"
I suppose if you would go for it, might as well adapt the dashboard panel to the screen and spray paint it?

Each to their own but more suited to the Barryboys with their 10 year old Clios and Saxos in my opinion.

I agree to a certain extent and deliberated for a while before going this route, but for me I love technology and gadgets so a head unit like this is right up my street, I will try to make it look as natural as possible as this was why I thought about if for so long, it has to look right and I'm going to try and get the finished surround to look just like the factory grey plastic that the vents and stock head unit are made from.

Sounds like a good idea, I also noted that you need 4 pieces of plastic to mask the holes next to the unit? In my opinion (just a thought) It would look great if those two pieces would look like 1 (on each side), this way it has the same size as the unit. If afterwards you would paint the plastic pieces in the same color as the unit plastic (or the other way around), you might get a very "natural" effect? At least, that's how I see it in my strange mind :P

Will this work with the steering wheel controls? These work via the K-bus. I'm not sure how standard this is or if there is after market support at all.

Making plastic bits either side as one and then colour coding is an option yes.
Yes it works with the steering wheel controls!

Air vents, I had a play tonight and done this....

There's a few tweaks I still need to do to this top section and I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with it but it thought it worth a play! :D
Oh and yes the vents will work if this is my final choice.

That just looks like you've stuck a screen on the top lol. keep at it, i think it will look good but you may have to rethink that air vent idea? i had that pioneer h/u in my megane R26 its brill

lol! It does in the pics, in real life and daylight you can see its inbetween, but yeah all experimentation till I find something I'm happy with.

SUV's with double din satnavs sometimes have vertical air vents. If you have some more room to play with, you could change the shape of the opening in the dash?

Thats what the other guy did... fitted side vents... did a search for the thread.. looks much better:

i cant quite tell from the pics how deep this unit is? does it do satnav?

if its not too deep could it fit into the existing flip up screen holder?

if it could be fitted without looking too odd and intergrated into the exisiting steering controls it could be a good way to upgrade to a decent radio and iphone connection. lets face it the intravee and poineer thing needed to run it are about 300 so maybe not too much more for this.

Maybe look up 3D printing to manufacture a new facia with built in vents. Like the facia in the link above, but maybe a bit prettier. Providing the plans were good enough, the thing could look OEM, rather than a DIY job.

EDIT: in fact, that's a really good idea, I might look into it!

That does look good, but not sure what it looks like up close. 3D printing sounds interesting though, never would have thought of that :)

+1 on that idea. Just need to brush up on my 3d cad skills.
