First year of the 3.0si problems?

Any common problems with the 2006 models of the 3.0si? Or are there any problems in general for the 3.0si engine? I am debating back and forth between a 2005 3.0 or a 2006 3.0si. Miles are about the same (super low), and the prices are close to each other. The 3.0si would be CPO, and the 2005 is out of warranty in December. Ideas? Comments?

This is my first post year. I have been lusting after the Z4 since I had my Z3. I just sold my 328i and am ready for fun again. :driving:

Thanks for any help!

Josh

Don't know about your question - not heard of many problems though.

Welcome to the forum and happy hunting

If the prices are roughly similar, go for the N52 3.0Si. It's a significant improvement over the older M54 in the 3.0i. Lighter, more fuel efficient, more powerful (+30bhp), revs a bit higher (IIRC) and it sounds better.

I have had my 2008 3.0Si Coupe since March and have done 11k miles. The only problem has been a rattle from teh gearbox which turned out to be a dual mass flywheel. I don't think it's a common problem as it took BMW a while to diagnose but they took care of it and everything is back to normal now.

I'm not familiar with any widespread worrisome problems. In fact, BMW's engines are universally lauded for their solidity, dependability and steadfast potency. So if the prices are similar and both cars have equally low and well documented miles, then I'd opt for the newer 3.0si with the CPO warrantee. Because you just know that, no matter what, Murphy's Law will kick in December 1st. :P

Or it could come down to features, packages or simply color preference.

Regardless, choosing one Z4 over the other is a no-lose scenario. :D

dual mass flywheel, hmmmm, that might be my little "rattle"......

As to engine-LOVE it. None of knows how well it will hold up in the long run, but you can bet that BMW ran more than a few of them into the ground before they put it into production.

Hmm... 'rattle' ... ?

Could you perhaps describe this or the symptoms more? I have a late 07 3.0si Coupe with 12k miles on the clock... and I just cant get over the feeling that the gearbox still feels really clunky, and particularly when cold I think i hear a rattle... ;O

Thanks,

Krzys

halcyon, welcome to the forum...
I have 06 3.0si and no problem at all with the engine after 40,000 plus miles.... :driving:

I first notice the "rattle" as I sat at a light, slight upward incline, gearbox in neutral and clutch pedal not depressed. Heard a rattle that I thought might be a loose compressor for the a/c. It was a sound that was consistent over those conditions. Turned off the ventilation fan and depressed the clutch pedal. Voila, no rattle. Has to be involving the clutch in some way. Next time I take her in for service, I'll have them check as it doesn't seem to affect driveability at all.

As to clunky, not at all, much the same as my 2003 325Ci, only with 6 forward gears rather than 5.

halcyon, Josh...welcome to the forum and bite me. :poke: :poke: :D

Listen sucka, don't make me hurt you. :D

I am torn. I found a 3.0si in PA for the same price as a local CarMax 2005 3.0. I like the color of the CarMax Z4 better, but I am not a fan of CarMax. The 3.0si is at a dealer and is a CPO. I would have to drive it down to Florida... a long drive. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Do any of the local guys have both in stock? Drive 'em.The Si has more horsepower and it gets about the same gas mileage as my old 325 did!

I think you better get to PA before the weather makes you wish you did this sooner. 8)

WLH, btw, Josh and I go back quite a few years in the KC BMW CCA Chapter.
I figured that out by myself actually.... :scratchhead:
Cause you usually don't insult anyone until they have 1 star... :P

Just traded in my 3.0 for an M. Had the 3.o for just over 3.o years - car now 5 years old - plenty of niggles along the way - but absolutely no complaints in the engine department (apart from a healthy appetite for oil :D )

Never had the new 3.0 so can't comment - but the older one is superb !

I would go for the one at the dealer, not only is it the bigger engine, but you should still have the original warranty on it, and for longer than the 05 will.

I can get a star???

Greg insults people??? He's usually so nice and reserved.

Get the pre-face lift model Josh and you won't here the end of it. So now that we have that out of the way when are you going to PA?

Those are exactly the symptoms I had. The rattle became really loud so I brought it to the dealer and got the dual mass flywheel replaced. There is still a very faint rattle now but it's very hard to hear. Apparently it's normal. Replacing the flywheel seemed to fix the problem.
