first date

Every woman that has been in my car so far has made this noise when they got in...

"eeee!"

They've all been genuinely caught out by how low it is compared to their own cars. Also, when accelerating hard...

"eeee!"

Apart from that, no real feedback from the ladies apart from my aunty (if she counts) saying "you look like chinese james bond".

Couldn't care less if any girl other than my better half likes my car or not. I do however love the fact that all my son's mates think it's a cool car :D

Thats what its about bing! Coolest dad on the block :D

What me and my mates thought about my dad when he used to pick and drop us/me off from school in his beems! Give us a good blast down the M6 before taking us home. Awesome

Wow, 64 posts in 18 hours. I guess I hit a nerve. It's a fun social experiment, at the least. I'm aware there is no test to avoid the gold digger types in deep cover. If only there was a questionnaire I could hand them to complete before getting involved...

@ Liam-O- I understand. I wouldn't be concerned at 22, either. But take notes on these posts. Your time to deal with this issue is coming soon enough. Perhaps the issue will arise with your future 2023 BMW i8 Spyder...

@ Marco- I hear ya. I had a buddy that took out a girl that most of his friends agreed was a 10 (which is a shallow, subjective standard, I admit ladies. No hate mail, please.) She seemed nice enough. Two dates in, everything was great, as she hadn't yet seen his beater of a car. When he went to pick her up for the 3rd, she sees it and said "THAT'S your car?" She barely spoke the rest of the night. That ended that. "And he lived happily ever after."

@ tomscott- then count yourself lucky. People with good character don't let "things" matter more than people, IMO. Perhaps it's my area. And though they don't know WHAT it is, many assume a BMW 2 seat roadster = $$$$$$$. They also don't know it's 5 years old, as they don't know cars, and I keep it in tip top shape. It could be brand new for all they know.

@ Stuart Truman- The ladies I speak of don't know the price of a Z4, new or used. I've asked several- they often say mine (2007) is currently worth more than it cost new. The ones I've heard around the office discussing a guy's car, neighborhood, etc., were about 1/2 secretaries/receptionists and 1/2 professionals, so I might agree with the search for an equal being 50% of the equation. Maybe. Maybe that's a gender difference; I don't care if my lady is a receptionist or a surgeon. The job she holds is about as important to me as her car. That said, I'll direct the gold diggers in your direction. They will, of course, expect you to buy them the plane ticket to get there. 1st class.

So what we're saying in summary is - US women are far more shallow than those in the UK?!

That's a good question. I think that has yet to be determined.

I have often thought about this when I have been out on a date, we meet up at a restaurant and they see me get of the Zed, what do they think? Is it going to be better or worse with the Merc?

I'd say it's going to be about the same. My view as an American man: it doesn't matter. Neither would change my existing opinion of you as my date. I would say you have good taste, either way.

dr_john said:
this is a bit of a myth about americans and cars. i lived in the states for several years and most of my american buddies wouldn't have given a toss about the cars they drove as long as they got them to where they wanted to go.

Agreed. But, is this not also the case with most Brits? I figured we forum members are the minority: just a small group of petrolheads; we are not representative of most of the driving public, regardless of country.

One thing a woman needs is finacial security in a relationship, so they'll assume they'd have it in a guy driving a Zed

I don't think this is true of all women - I have worked hard to ensure my own financial security. A lot of chat here about women who may be interested in what the guy has financially/professionally but it works both ways too. I don't want someone to be with me just because of my profession/salary etc so I guess taking a nice car on a date is a concern for me too.

I agree. Diggers are not limited to one sex. It's a shame that more folks, guys and gals, don't share your outlook. It would be nice to drive my Z4 on first dates and not have to wonder...

I'm curious as to how many others out there leave the Z4 at home when going on a first date. Is it just me? I've worked around many ladies in prof. offices over the last few years, and have found that many of the "gold digging" types (as I perceive them), upon meeting a new guy, are overly interested in what a guy drives, what neighborhood he lives in, whether he's a doctor, barrister, etc. They seem much less interested in his age, character,

I can attest to that, I've no problem finding good looking females to go out with that are at least 20 years younger than myself, the trouble is most already know what car I drive because our village is a hot-bed of gossip,

There do seem to be a never-ending stream of what I also call "gold diggers" that are only looking for security and a comfortable life, I'm sure if I drove an old banger etc I wouldn't get a look in with a lot of them.

I was at a funeral reception a few month's ago and this lady I new (June) was sitting next to and talking to this good looking female (late 30's) who kept giving me the 'stare' and smiling I said to my daughter "looks like I've clicked there" and she said "yes you probably have after June's told her how affluent you are" so I said "nothing to do with my rakish charm then" when I was on my own for a few minutes she came up to me and introduced herself-and we had a good couple of month's after that.

The biggest problem I find is when you let them stay over for a weekend they seem to think that's a prelude to moving in!!!!.

Well as a guy who has been on a few first dates I can give you an idea of this...

2-3 girls after introducing the car will get in the car, say its nice and that's about it. By that stage I knew there was no spark though, the Z4 wasn't going to miraculously make up for that.

1-2 girls liked the car more than me and therefore just wanted me for materialistic views. It's funny they would text back and were seductive.

1 girl who I currently just had my third date with, we both walked out of the bar on the first date. I asked what car was hers and she looked rather sheepish. I pointed out a Kia and she then said no and pointed to a white Audi TT. I called her a poser bitch... Then I had to point out my Z4. If anything it backed up my story I had ambition and drive to get the best out of life. I think more importantly it shows that maybe you both have a passion for nice cars.

I get quite a few smiles from girls in my car but I am at traffic lights, I have no way to take advantage of that. Is my car a fanny magnet? Well it's attracted a 2 girls and I am convinced its came in to their thinking however are those girls right for me? No! I am just looking for a nice girl who likes my car but likes me more importantly. If they want a nice car then they can go and work for one like I did...

Exactly. And, it looks like you are gathering some nice "research data." :poke:

As I like my drink, I take a taxi. First date without good wine? Nah, never. I also don't think girls are interested in cars, maybe with the exception of the gold-digging 10%, but you can sense the type from a mile away. Most say that the coupe "looks like a tiger" or a "Bond car" but is "not a practical family car". That's all. There are so many new Carreras, GTRs, R8s or new M cars, that the true gold digger could not care less. The Zed is more like a lifestyle statement. A kind of "the guy I can have fun with, but nothing too serious" reaction sort of thing. Some women try to read the 'penis extension' thing into any sports car, but fortunately I find it quite rare.

Still smiling from the suggestion that an Audi TT is a pulling machine

Much much more than any Z4 in any guise.

As Tomscott said the cool thing about being a dad is looking at cars in a different way.

The car that draws the most looks from anyone from a 4 yr old child to a pensioner is not the TT or the Z4 or 911 but Luigi, the fiat 500D

My son loves it, his friends adore it and everyone wants it.

The suicide doors mix up everyone haha

Even when stood next to a Lambo, it still draws the crowds.

I will try to take a pic of it next to some nice cars.

Shawn

To be honest, if you took the badges off, most girls wouldnt know the difference between a z4 and a 206cc, I think the badge means more to a gold digger than the car.

At my age there probably isn't an issue, the missus hates my car anyway, and if she didn't work out, I'd just make sure I'd bag up so I don't get "tied down"

Obviously when your the other side of the hill, I think women worry less about the man, and more about the money, but car isn't indication of wealth (usually lack of when fuel servicing and roof motors are involved). On a first date your usually going to talk about occupation and that's a bigger insight into potential wealth so your car would be irrelevant?

I think what I'm trying to say is, go for younger girls, theyre cheaper to run, and if you must go vintage, Ofcourse it will cost more, but make sure she's a good looking model so it will feel like the expense is worthwhile

Anyone relying on a car to pull women is off to a very bad start.

I fully agree with you and if you read the thread we said it many times.

However the OP remarked about first dates and the Z so I guess to stay on topic, we have to discuss girls and cars.

My opinion is the same like most here, few girls (or at least the ones I meet) give a hoot about the car.

I would be weary of going to a date with the Z knowing that you can buy one with small change.

If my date plays her cards right on the first night, I might just give her a sneak preview under the bed sheets!!

Tim.

What is wrong with all that brickwork in there - it is all over the place :?

My last first date was 25 years ago - been married 22 now :)

You can buy a TT with even smaller change though. That's what puzzled me about your assertion.

You really really don't like the TT do you or understand why someone would buy one, but they do and do so in numbers that BMW can only dream about for the Zed. Does that make it a better car, in some way yes and in others no, it just depends on what you want from the car.

Not sure what provoked that outburst.

I was deliberately avoiding a comparison of the two cars which would just be a dead end of opinion and bias as we've already proved on countless occasions. Shawna just made a statement about the TT that was without fact and was entirely opinion. That was all I was trying to illustrate. As I said in an earlier post above, anyone who places any importance on what car someone drives, as a basis for whether they wish to get to know them better or not, is a person not worth knowing better.

Oh and BMW could easily increase Z4 sales by fitting small rear seats to a coupe version. Then it would appear on hundreds more company car lists that currently forbid 2-seater or Roadsters. Compare TT Roadster sales with Z4 Roadster sales...both of which only have 2 seats.

LOL - are you sure?

I think YOUR facts are totally wrong.

An AUDI TT S LINE special edn like the one in the pic 2011 facelift model retails at 25K.

The sister of that car I showed you is here:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201241487869297/sort/default/usedcars/maximum-age/up_to_1_year_old/maximum-mileage/up_to_20000_miles/fuel-type/diesel/colour/white/model/tt/make/audi/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/page/1/postcode/cb20sd/radius/1500/advert-type/standard-listing?logcode=ucnnp

I can buy 2 Z4M's or 4 Z4 3.0i like i own...

I am not slating the Z. But in todays world the TT has much more pulling power. I can assure you the girls like it a lot especially in white. (based on fact)

Happy?

Is it wrong to sneakily like the TT-RS :?

Nope 8)

The debate is de-generating though... To concede shawna's point I will need to see some statistically relevant research proving his facts :P
