Finally I have a 30i

I suppose it’s main function it the ability to open and close the roof system from the key fob. They aren’t cheap but they make the car like it should have been from the factory.
Do a search on the forum and every question and answer is available or have a look on YouTube

I agree, the smart top module was worth the cost, I like the convenience of of one touch roof closure at 25mph and all the other options it sets.
Has anybody mentioned getting a stubby antenna yet.

I thought there were some parts strengthened in the later models to allow for opening on the move?

They do say so - but mine worked perfectly well on a previous car ( 2010 ) and it’s something I still do with caution on the late 2016 car.
I can’t recall ever reading about anyone experiencing an on the move problem.

So after digging a little deeper following yesterday’s relay changes, I notice the foam under the pump sits is a little damp. Wouldn’t say it’s wet but you can feel a little dampness if you push the back of your hand into the foam. Are there any known causes checks for where the damp might be coming from (I understand there aren’t any drain holes on the E89).?

It’s clear the previous owner cleaned what could be seen, as all the boot run offs, under the bonnet and the scuttle drains had plenty of debris in them which I (weirdly) quite enjoying cleaning up. Could the bits of old leaf etc have stopped water draining properly around the boot lip and led to the little bit damp I’ve described?

Nice and sunny today, so I will get some sun into the boot to get it nice and dry

BMW stated that it had been strengthened for the 2012 MY allowing opening up to 30 mph..a former contributor poo poohed the idea..

Finally............ delighted you got there and it looks lovely 👍

No problem, it was an absolute pleasure.

Lots of good suggestions and comments, one of the ones I’d definitely agree with is the Smartop module. I bought new as the 2nd hand ones weren’t much cheaper.

Enjoy :driving:

There's a couple of places to check where the water is coming in, and quite a few threads on it. firstly I'd check the tail lights to see if the seals are wet and letting in water, then there are the seals around the roof closure at the top on either side just where the 2 torque screws are (the water comes in a little lower -see picture ).

Check around the electronics on the right hand side under the cover. if these get wet its very expensive!

I think the former contributor attributed the extra solonoid on the pump as the only strengthening measure, the actual mechanics were unchanged i believe, so the force applied to the structure to operate it was increased but it’s ability to withstand the extra force was the same as before :?

Strengthened or not it’s something I still use with some caution. However It really comes into it’s own when you’ve just decided to drop the roof then the traffic lights go to green
Don’t be put off buying a module by any of these recent discussions tho! It will only allow operation up to 25mph and if the mechanism does see any extra kinetic load ie going over bumps, on a side slope or going around a bend - it pauses the process.

Looks great.. hope to join the 30i club soon, may end up in a 23i though as there seems plenty more about, hopefully I can remain patient like yourself until the right car turns up
The 3.0i club like the sound of that
