I've only had my Z4 for about a month now and was visited by one of the girls from the cafe to say someone has hit my car. After a look around with no suspects in sight, I resolved myself to having to pay the $650 excess on my insurance and higher premiums going forward. I called the insurance, lodged the claim and went to BMW to get an estimate, very sad for my poor girls front end.

After getting back to the office there is a knock on the door and one of the young girls from the cafe' was there in tears, she had accidentally driven into it. Her boss had a spare park next to mine and was away so she thought she would save $4 parking at the carpark by using his park. Backing into the park she noticed she was heading towards my car, jumped on the brakes which was actually the accelerator, it was quite a shunt.

She was really upset she didn't come straight forward but she panicked and had felt sick since. She is only 21 with no insurance so the insurance will go after her now and it won't cost me anything, however feel really bad for her now stuck with huge bill. Unfortunately in NZ you don't have to have insurance, stupid law.

Needs new headlight and front bumper, they are going to check the wheel and alignment etc. you can actually see the impact mark on the tire. They say they can fix the bonnet/hood what do you think?

I had a similar impact in mine, knocked the bumper out of place, small dent in the bonnet and light was a bit wonky - the insurance repair bill was over £5000 :o

Gone are the days when a bumper was a bumper and if it had a dent it was a cheap throwaway item, the front bumper is probably ironically one if the most expensive parts to damage in an accident now with all the sensors etc.

I hope it gets sorted out soon, mine was done and looked like new within a week.

Crazy that there is no insurance required in NZ though!

That sucks :( why can people drive properly but I guess accidents happen :x

Good luck in the dealer/bodyshop repairing the bonnet as its quite creased :| I would push for a new one.

Tim.

It will have surely shaken the young girl up tho - :( The metal bits will mend.

But what a bonkers law no comp insurance - that's the worst bit.

Hopefuly won't cost the young girl too much. Is it common to settle without involving the insurance company then? Surely it would be cheaper for her if they were not involved further. Guess you have the garantee of good repair and less hastle going via the insurance though and it was entirly her fault by the sound of it.

What was the young lady driving? Auto or stick?
If she has a stick shift. Why was she not covering the clutch. If she has an auto. Was she two footing the pedals? If so. What the heck was she doing two footing it. Probably a lack of proper training or driver laziness. Personally I think folks with autos that two foot the pedals are at the root cause of most "unintended acceleration" reports.

As for feeling bad for her because of the lack of insurance. Don't feel bad for her at all. She had the choise. She made a bad one. It wasn't mandatory to NOT have insurance either.

Just out of interest what happens in this situation if the lady cannot pay the money, for example she doesn't have 3k sat in her bank, does the insurance company of the OPs car still payout for him and the insurance company loses out?

In the US. The insurance would fix the car then file a claim against the girl. Just like a credit agency. They could get a summery judgement from a civil court and have a certain amount of her wages garnished to repay said debt.

Well atleast she did the right thing and owned up?

I had someone hit my passenger door a few years ago... Over £900 damage and drove off, no note nothing... Which i had to pay out of my own pocket to fix :headbang:

I don't know what she was driving, I was just lucky she fronted up eventually. In NZ the insurance company pays for everything I don't lose my bonus or anything. They will send her the bill for the damages and she will need to make payments to them.
For the sake of about $20/month insurance.

Wouldn't be letting them fix that bonnet.

That's a new bonnet.

It all has to be painted anyway and blown into the doors and the A panels to match up.

Hope it comes out like new.
