Feeling Down After Test Drive

Having spent hours on here reading threads and reviewing brochures and magazine reviews I'd really built myself up for a new Z4. My main requirement for a new car is that it should be suitable for two people and their golf equipment. The Z4 certainly meets my need to have an interesting car and I thought that the 23 would be sufficiently brisk to meet my need for speed. I've been pretty excited about the prospect of finding a car that ticks all the boxes.

The first disappointment was that the demo car was an automatic whereas I want a manual. According to the brochure this increases the 0-60 time from 6.6 seconds to a lazy 7.3. And I have to say that the car felt slow. When I jumped in my auto Jag to go home it highlighted that the Z4 was not in the same league as far as performance is concerned. So, while I hoped that the test drive would confirm that it was the right choice for me it has only added doubts. I know I can increase the performance by increasing engine size so this is not in itself a deal breaker. However, I was hoping that someone on here has had experiences of auto and manual and can confirm if the manual feels a lot quicker. If not I'll have to go for another test drive but its not worthwhile doing unless I can resolve the following.

On the golf bag front it will certainly accommodate my largish bag either longways by sticking the clubs through the rear seats with the roof down or across the boot with the roof up. However, there is simply no way that a second set would lie across if my bag is in the first position. I've seen the video where two sets are fitted in this manner so I know that it can be done. Can anyone confirm that it can be done with anything other than the thinnest golf bags? This is the do or die issue for me.

I'm really rather deflated at the moment :( .

What do you expect from a 2.3? What's in your Jag? Probably not a 2.3...You should have been driving a 35i with a DCT transmission. Mine is a "hair" slower then my E46 M3 6 speed and a hell of a lot faster shifting than it was.

AS for the golf clubs, I'm sure you can do it with a minimum amount of clubs in each set and travel bags to put them in. I put rifle cases in my Zed, and the all the ancillary equipment that goes with them. No problems.

Edit: Go back and get a test drive in a 35i with a DCT box, drive it like a rented car and then see what you think.....I did that, then I traded my M3 on a new 35i.

I can fit 2 golf bags in the boot, providing I take the drivers out and lay them on top or in the passenger seat.

You talking about a New 09/59 plate? or just new to you? - what was the car you looked at? 2.5l auto?

I know where you are coming from though. For fun, I test drove the 35i with DCT which was for me at least, a huge disappointment. It was always in the wrong gear at a roundabout and contravened my decissions all the time. You would brake for a roundabout, put it in 2nd, then as soon as you would take your foot of the brake - it would shift up to third, no matter what you would do which made the car feel very sluggish coming out of sharp turns etc.

It is so important to drive the car with the gearbox you want as otherwise it will be a disappointment. My first test drive in a 3.0 Z in 2003 was an auto box and I did not like the drive much. Another drive in a manual box completely changed my mind that it was a nice drive after all.

Find a manual box first, then try. Don't bother with DCT if you don't like auto boxes as it will feel the same.

Question, did you have it in manual sport mode or just shift it in S ? ...because mine doesn't shift up until 6500rpm in manual sport.

I had it in Manual but despite that, it would override my decisions. So I would see a 2 on the dash in front of me, touch the brakes and a 3 would appear and it would switch down.

So coming to a roundabout at say 50 mph in 3rd gear, slow down to 25 mph, put the gear in 2nd, brake a bit more, go around the roundabout without using the accelerator and just before going around it would have shifted up to 3 again. No matter whether in Manual, Sport or auto mode - it all did the same.

Sure - I could get it back in 2nd again after it had moved to 3rd but it was not what I wanted so that gearbox was just not for me.

Manual for me everytime. The Zed has never been designed to carry large amounts of luggage so its always going to be a compromise trying to get two sets of golf clubs in. Perhaps a Zed is not the vehicle for you.

Never felt a problem with the car using DCT with or without the gear lever pushed to the passenger's side in the sports mode and with sports or sports+ mode engaged.

As for the golf clubs, I get a full size trolley bag and clubs with a 'sun mountain' trolley (http://www.sunmountain.com/default.php?cPath=3471_3551_3494 which is larger than most push carts) into the boot with the roof up. Also, with the roof up I have no problem getting 2 full sets of clubs, inc drivers, with carry bags into the car and I a;lways leave the drivers in the bags. Moreover, I have even had 2 full sets of clubs with 1 standard carry bag and 1 slim carry bag in the boot with the roof down. Bottom line - no problem carry items like this and certainly far more adaptable than my previous SLK.

The Jag is an XK60 Convertible so is a much larger 4.2l V8 :) . However, it is much heavier and 0-60 is 6 seconds, not too far away from the 6.6 seconds quoted for the Z. If I can resolve the golf issue I will be arranging another test drive. I'm trying to reduce my motoring expenditure, primarily depreciation, so had hoped that the smallest engine would suffice.

Yes, I'm talking the latest version and yes, 2.5l auto.

Now this makes me feel a lot more positive :) . Sounds like I'd need to downsize my bag and get my friend to do the same.

I'm sure everything will work out for you in favour of the Zed, unfortunately "depreciation" is like death and taxes, unavoidable unless you are a Jedi Master with a trick we don't know about.

I drove an M3 6 speed and a Z3 5 speed before my current Z4 7spd DCT and I would not go back. I didn't expect much on my first Z4 test drive in a 35i but I was surprised by how close it was to my M in the "zippy" department, it doesn't handle quite as well as the M did but that's to be expected. As I said before, I traded my M3 for the new one with no regrets.

Ciao, :driving: :driving:

Have a look at this http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=14229

Yes, saw that during my earlier research, thanks  .

I've just measured the base of my golf bag and it is 9 1/2 inches, which seems to be as big as they come except Tour bags. First port of call tomorrow is the Pro shop to see how small I could get away with.

Indeed, but it can be reduced by buying lower in the range, hence looking at the 23 first. However, if it is not suitable I would go for an engine that is :driving: .

Well we picked up our Z4 2.3 auto beginning of March. Its the wifes car as I've something rather different as the family car, and she commutes into London or M25 (car park) to Staines etc....She had a 535d MSport before so it was always going to be a bit of a change.

Anyway she adores the car , boot is big enough for her tat , gym bag etc , lovely colour , great spec , super interior, well built etc etc

Walked in the other night and said she wished she got the bigger engine. Yes she had the test drive in the exact replica of her car but she misses that occasional moment when she can push on a bit.

So I would say to anyone looking at one of these, the 2.3 is nice but the 3.0 is probably worth that extra £3k. After all its only money.....

Stu

Thanks for that Stu  . At least I know where I stand regarding engine size, although I will need to arrange another test drive. However, not much point in doing that yet as I'm still not convinced on the golf side of things but have been looking at alternate bags as mine is a bit on the lardy side. As this is to be a September purchase time is on my side.

'I'm going to have to go and play a bit and see if i can replicate that...'

:) do you work in software design or support perchance?

debating a new Z4 3.0 or a Boxster S ... have to sway getting swayed towards Boxster even though I do really like the Z4 styling.
