Favourite Road(s) ever driven, and car driven on it.

Following from my favourite cars owned, desired etc thread....thought it would be interesting to see people's favourite roads driven, and the car they were in at the time.
Exact road names and pics not necessary, but feel free to list them if you want

For me,its many a Road round Scotland ....inc the many roads on a forum run ....back in the day, circa 2009/2015,with me and Adamski chasing each other down in our very similar, 3.0i z4s
Also the roads on the Skye trip, with 1 particular memory of Gary and Tony and myself keeping each other on our toes,in our respective M Roadster/Coupes

The NC500 route, various sections of it,in 2019,with a few great sections in particular will always stick in my mind,in my current z4.
Some truly amazing driving roads, and some equally great company.

The many roads we do regularly on the National meet,up around North Yorkshire,Northumbria, etc and the Alston and the Shap roads.

Not to mention the past couple years when we have been allowed out,on various runs round Scotland with my forum friends.

Some of the early North Wales evo triangle runs in 2009,etc,that Sammyz did, in both my 3.0 and current z4m,as well as the Wee run out with me and Sammy and Guiseley in Wales, when I had a nice Jag f type v6s and on hire.

Also, back in Scotland, the Mennock Pass and Wanlockhead roads that I have done many times, inc on forum runs over the years of my own and Ally, etc before me.

One last one, that equals them all,is a Road fairly local to me,which I do fairly regularly, so won't list it,lol
But if you get it free of traffic, its a great road.

This is just for a bit of fun so no need to be listing exact roads if you don't remember the road numbers etc,lol

The road down the side of Loch Lomond. North to South. I have driven a ridden it several times. But only once at 5AM on a bright May Sunday morning. Sun up not another vehicle on the road. I was driving my ///MR like I stole it. What a rush that was. :driving:

Every other time I have driven that stretch there has been slow traffic. Not that day. :D

Yes,buzyg,it's a good road if you get it clear if traffic, although,as you say,it doesn't happen too often unfortunately.
Nice one

You mean UK only? For me, the Alps in the (manual) 911 are the true fantastic roads to drive on with the hairpins and no speed limits to worry about (as you can't really reach them in the mountains).

The NC500 has a bitter memory of such poor road quality that it damaged the paint so badly it needed a respray. No great roads in the South East due to either cyclists or speed traps or potholes.

No Paul, just any roads you've ever driven, wherever that may be.
I like the nc500 roads, but some are patchy quality, while others are just sublime to drive, and In good condition.
I heard the Porsches had a really bad time on it,and were worse than the zeds for stone chips.

Given you're in Ayrshire, I used to love a drive along the coast from Ayr to Culzean, in my MX5 (whichever one of them I had at the time) even in summer it was never that busy, plenty of nice corners and straights. It really suits the wee Miata.
The road to Kingussie from Spean Bridge can be superb too, but not in the summer when the hordes of "scenic gourmets" are about. Similarly I used to have to commute from Ft Wm to Kyle once a week, leaving at 6am, the road over the pass at Glen Garry was great fun in the MR, but coming home again in the evening when the tourists are up is an exercise in frustration especially after a long day at work :headbang:

So many good roads in the alps and as you can literally spend all day driving there, it’s hard to name any. I think my longest door to door trip was 11 hours in a Mk2 Golf 16v, just for drivings sake!

I’ve had amazing drives in everything from a company fiesta to my Z4, you’ve just got to watch the brakes on the less sporty cars!

Driven plenty of times on forum runs and impromptu meets the road from Middleton in teesdale through to Alston is a fantastic stretch of road, coupled with the fact it leads onto the Hartside Pass that's one of my favourite stretches of road

I drove so many brilliant roads when I did a tour of Scotland back in 2008 but driving around Skye and back across the bridge sticks in my memory. Shame I had a BMW 123d at the time!

In the last few years when I've been heading for Cheshire I often leave the M6 and join the M54 then head North on the A41 then A49. When there isn't too much traffic both of them have some fun stretches. Great in my 3.0Si, but even better in my MC.

Recent highlight was the B4391 between Bala and Blaenau-Ffestiniog last May in my MC. :D

A686 up Hartside pass and on towards Alston, then A689 towards Nenthead and Killopp. Done in the current and previous Zed and great in either direction. Superb views if you dare take your eyes off the road.

The pacific coast highway and roads off it were a massive surprise for me when I did a roadtrip from San Francisco to Calgary, Canada. I was in a convertible mustang. Driving through the giant redwoods in Oregon was spectacular.

The ring road around Crater Lake was pretty good too. I mean look at that view. 😍

Pretty much every mountain pass we did in South Africa. Roads were in good nick, fantastic views, hardly anyone on the road. Shame the hire car was a tank, would love to do it again in something a bit more fun. Although the amount of wrecks that had gone off the road and down the side is a bit of a concern

We did the garden route just before the pandemic hit. Some great roads over there. Not the best car I've ever driven but as you say not a lot on the road. Followed a 3 series for L'agullas around 100km up to the main highway, just stuck behind him the whole way, he was shifting a bit and never passed another car.

B48 and B500 in Germany….epic.

There are quite a few roads like that in the area
I like the road from Staufen im Breisgau up to Belchen - although they have spoiled the last few miles by preventing general traffic and forcing a cable car ride.

The Splugen Pass (Switzerland int Italy) Is a good drive

The B4391 in N.Wales is superb, the B6277 M-in-T to Alston road even better. A thrash up the Hartside Pass from Melmerby to the summit is great fun. The B6255 Ingleton to Hawes road and continuing on to Thwaite over the Buttertubs Pass is fabulous. Many others also spring to mind but in the company of friends and in a convoy of Z4s they are all sublime. However, if I had to choose just one road to drive then hands down and without hesitation I would head up to Carronbridge just north of Dumfries and then up the A702 Dalveen Pass to Elvanfoot. IMHO the best 15 miles of 'drivers' road in the country. If you catch it right with no or very little traffic and if the weather is dry it is just fantastic :driving:
You can then turn left back down the Mennock Pass and then right at Crawick up to Crawfordjohn. If you look on a map this forms an enormous 44 mile s-shaped route which really takes some beating. In fact it's so good I did it 3 times last summer...in both directions :D Screenshot_20220207-201738_Maps.jpg

Just saw this post, from a wee while ago, Gordon.
Totally agree with all of the above.
Plenty great wee back roads that are near me,as well as those down towards Ayr,etc as well.
You've got quite a few cracking roads not too far from you as well, Gordon......the joys of Scotland :driving:

Yes,some of my favourites too in those areas.

Couldn't agree more, drive it many many times over the years, and even included them in many of my meets in and around Dumfries and Galloway.

They're so much better to drive in a z4 than a wee works van right enough, lol
Bit far from you to travel to for a jaunt though?
When was the first time you drove it,on ore of my runs or what?
