Ok so the chap in Hayes appears to have fixed it. Supposed to be collecting Monday...

I'll update in good time I guess...
full diagnosis, remedial actions and critique required......

Well, the chaps in Hayes rung true.

Fitted a refurbished ECU which they had to code, and as if by magic, it works. I have done about 500 miles in the car and it's absolutely fine.

So, anyone that digs up this thread, the guys over at BW Chiptune in Hayes can solve your issue, however, as a word of warning, please bottom out the price with them first.

They are really great guys, but were not forth coming with the sheer amount of additional things they'd be adding to the 495+VAT price for a refurbed ECU. I left with a little bit of a sour taste due to things on the bill such as coding, diagnostics, testing etc.

Whilst I can understand these have to be done, the way the price was given to me implied that the cost of the refurbed ECU unit was 495+VAT.

So yeah, she's back and looking blooming marvellous even if I do say so myself.

Take it up with them? Argue the point and take it further if you're not happy.

I didn't pay 100% of what they were asking, so it wasn't too bad, but I just thought it's a point worth mentioning for all prospective customers.

good to be back on the road eh
always a good idea to get a total/final quotation up front. can understand that you felt misled but part of it is your onus to ask if the 495 includes everything etc.
what was the final tally?

It wasn't that I didn't ask, it was that I clearly didn't ask specifically enough. I'm fairly used to people being quite upfront, and it just felt a little like saying a reconditioned ecu is 495+VAT was a good way of getting me in the door.

I'd have expected them to point out that the price isn't including coding etc or was just for the part only, but it just wasn't.

They tried to charge me north of £900 in the fist instance, but had also taken it upon themselves to do an oil change and level sensor it didn't need, and I'd specifically asked not to do. So I knocked that off, also argued the toss over a couple of hours labour that were put down to "diagnostics" so in the end it cost me just north of £750 all in.

It's lovely to have it back and it runs perfectly now so I can't complain. Just need to sell the mini cooper s runaround I bought to get me by!

Going to sell this one on in the summer and buy the z4m/650i I've been wanting for a while I think.

That's pretty unacceptable in my book tbh.
The total price that's quoted is the price you should pay and any extras should be informed either before or during repairs etc. esp when u didnt ask for some of those things.
Sounds like blatant job-creation to me and I'd be pursuing a refund of the 250's worth of extras.
I remember arguing the toss with a dutch garage years ago who wanted to charge me 50 guilders for a bloody screenwash bottle refill as part of an inspection II on my old E36 when I specified that plus other delete options. I actually printed a list of things NOT to do but they tried to ignore that one. I got my way in the end but I had to argue with them.
But if the relief of having your zed back on the road cancels out the feeling that you've been over-charged then I suppose you've accepted it.

On the plus side they did actually fix it, which is more than the previous outfit did how much did they charge you for their attempt

Did you by chance pay on a card? If a credit card, if so you can make a claim with the card co for the difference between what you were quoted, and the additional work that you told them not to do, just explain to the card co that you paid "under duress" simply to get your car back.

It's fixed so I'm not going to complain too much, we met in the middle on the situation and whilst it was more than quoted, it's sorted.
