i'm sure this isn't true, the car knows a tyre is flat via the difference in rotational speed that a loss of pressure brings between the wheels left and right - not physical pressure

That is true for pre-facelift Z4s and non-US post-facelift ones. Believe me, I have the sensors IN the tires.
