F-Type R Coupe: Chris Harris

Just to start the massdebate

What would you go for....an M4 or an F Type (not the R obviously)

Great test by the way

And then my add on....it's still a Jag, and I'd rather have a Porsche.....people who have the money to spend would not want to be labelled as not wise with their funds, but you'd have to be stupid with your money if you knowingly bought one of these and knew it would drop shed loads in the first 2 years....

The interior of the F30 and F32 are woefully bad... I was looking at a 2.0d F30 originally than sat in one after being in the F10 5 series and its not a nice place tbh.

The screen looks tacky and bolted on.. and the idrive is still clumsy.

They look great from the outside.. but the M4 is still not a patch on the F type in the looks department.

The M4 probably drives better.. but then if you are not going to track it then why would you ever get a M4 over an F type?

It's just the awful interior.....I feel bad that I was involved in the marketing reserach on the 3.5 years ago....and for it to come out like this....its that awful steering wheel and second generation navigation housing display etc which lets it down. The interior is equally important to me, than the exterior looks and performance

I love it as well. :driving:

+1, that's an amazing car

Grandad, it's a Jag, and for as long as people call it that, you'll be wearing a short sleeve shirt with a a pen in it when you turn 50....

The best think they could do is to change the brand name......

Totally disagree - this is like the 'mercs are for grandads' discussion on Maniac's thread. The world moves on. It looks gorgeous, sounds gorgeous and drives brilliantly - I'm afraid all of that overrides any badge-phobia I might have, and if I got the opportunity to own one I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks.

And anyway, if you insist on talking brand stereotypes... You haven't got a leg to stand on gramps :poke: :P

Points taken, but when your F Type is worth £24.99 after 3 years, unlike the Porsche, try convincing your Mrs that the money was well lost for the driving pleasure......

Still don't think people would choose an F Type over a 991 if the decision actually came to it and your debit card was about to be handed over.

Personally i think its great this class of car has got very competitive - the F-Type, 991 , AMG GT, R8 and in someways i8.

All will loose a lot of money over 3 years , Jaguars first outing is excellent considering how long porsche have had to round the 911, Coupe is the only choice the boot in the F-type roadster is a joke - how they managed to make it so small i will never know. Pity as the roadster was kind of unique in that it looks 100 times cooler than a 911 Cab - but a Boxter is much more useful as a tourer because of the boot space.

I think the 991 GTS is going to take some beating ... but its going to be a good fight.

but compare something like this

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/jaguar/f-type/jaguar-f-type-5-0-v8-supercharged-r/3103601

with what a 991 would cost

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/911-carrera-991/porsche-911-carrera-s-pdk/2888713

that is a big difference

Personally if i had to pick between a 911 and an F type i would go Porche... just because i am a poser and rather have the porche keyfob over a jag one....

But the stereotype of Jag being old peoples cars are long gone... same as how people called the boxter a poor mans 911...... There is a 25 year old at work who has just got the F roady on PCP with his car allowance.... they certainly are appealing to younger people now.... and the jag sales picking up overt he last couple of years really show it too.

The only people who call a Boxster a poor mans 911 are people that don't own a Porsche!!

When I did the research testing on the car, for the interior and options etc, the 2 cars they had it compared with, in their testing showing, were a Boxster and a 911

I don't think the Jag Old Man tag is long gone, it will always be there.

Its a nice addition to the market.

Not sure I'd buy one but that is academic because I can't afford one. Even if it depreciates like a stone (as I expect it will) down to £40k and into my price range I still don't think I would buy one. Just doesn't excite me. I like the looks but it looks a bit too "play it safe" to these eyes and that exhaust note is awful (all fake farting and belching). I appreciate that at this point I will be in a massive minority but I don't really like AMG exhausts either. I prefer a high-revving screamer of an engine/exhaust.

But having said that, good effort Jag. Nice to see you back on form and selling some great products again.

I'd never buy a car with an eye on the resale value - haven't got enough cash for it to be something I'd do regularly (ever  ), and when I read posts on here about depreciation and resale value being a deciding factor in buying even our cars I feel the life being sucked out of me. And the fun of owning them.

It's a legitimate concern though Bing. The lower the depreciation the more equity I build up using my work car allowance, which means each car swap is for a nicer, more expensive model. It doesn't mean you are any less of a petrolhead. I see it as assisting me one day being able to afford to buy the cars I dream about owning. Besides, whilst all cars are money pits, i don't like throwing away money needlessly.

I think the residuals will be very good...

The XK prices have held up really well.....No reason the F type wouldnt either..

The thing is with a porsche, everyone dislikes you.. At least with a jag they think you are a gent instead of a cnut...
